Is anyone using a Trimble R8 Model 3 base & rover combo with Spectra Precision Survey Pro?
I just got our Trimble R-8 Model 3's back from repair/service and I noticed the coordinates when collecting data have a 2-4 second delay on updating and when staking out a point or line the direction numbers have the same delay.
Trimble R-8 firmware 4.81 and survey pro software 4.11.2.
Has anyone else had the same problem and know how to fix this issue?
Trimble Tech support isn't any help.
4 years ago I made the switch from topcon to trimble all because of the survey pro software and I'm really not like my decision.
sounds more like hardware..what collector?
I'm not saying it doesn't exist, but I haven't see the delay spelled out when using Trimble receivers and Trimble Survey Controller or Access. There is a delay between hitting "accept" and hearing the actual sound of the shot being stored.
I have seen the latency displayed on our Leica systems.
Seems like there will always be a little delay, a lot of processing is taking place to give real-time positions. Because of this, I always use a robot if I need to have faster updates on positions while staking.
So I am assuming that your latency issue started after it came out of service. Is this correct? If so..I have a couple of questions for you.
- What was it in service for?
- Were you running these to FW versions before it went into service?
- What type of base data connection do you have? Multi-station VRS, Single station VRS, RTK, etc..
I'm with you on that.
We have both an R8 and an S8 with TSC3's running Trimble Access.
Stakeout is easier with the S8 - with the R8 the position updates shown on the controller are slower and seem jumpier. I figure about a 25 - 30% time benefit using the robot.
Mayhaps you are using a repeater and the base receiver is set for base only?

The ftp site has videos comparing the GPS Units.
The video Rental Reduced is the way our GPS unit was working before I sent it out for a service and firmware up-date. This is also the way the Rental GPS also a trimble r-8 model is working. This is the way it works with a Topcon GR-3 and HyperII, thanks to other local surveyors.
The video Fox Reduced is how our GPS unit is working after I received it back from trimble for a service and firmware update.
I changed the Firmware back to 4.63 and no change on our GPS units. Firmware 4.63 was on our GPS before I sent them out and this firmware is on the Rental GPS.
Using winflash I compared the settings and configuration on the rental GPS and Fox GPS and I don't see any difference between the units.
The base and rover set up is set on trimble internal radios.
I've tried different data collectors and survey pro software version.
Ranger 500X with Survey Pro version 4.11.2
Trimble CU with Survey Pro Version 4.8.5
Trimble T-41 with Survey Pro Version 5.2.1
They all show the same as the videos.
I'm stumped !
Like I said before Trimble isn't any help because they haven't returned my e-mails or phone calls.
Thanks for all the reply's.
I think that delay has to do with the elimination of 'fine', at least during stakeout.
I have not looked at your videos yet, but I would suggest using the latest firmware on your Survey Pro collector with R8-3's. I believe the latest version is 5.3.1,.
I have customers using this combination and have not seen any issues that you describe.
