Hello, I have a Trimble ACU running Trimble Survey Controller that has locked up (will not respond).

I tried the soft restart and the hard reboot, neither one works.

Any ideas other than wait for the battery to go dead?

Thanks in advance.

If you take the ACU off the cradle the internal battery will go dead in a matter of minutes.

If you take the ACU off the cradle the internal battery will go dead in a matter of minutes.

That was true for the first 10 years that we had it.
Last year we sent the gun in for service and requested that they replace the internal battery on the ACU at the same time they replaced the battery in the gun. I told them the idea was that it would keep the two batteries on the same replacement cycle (saving us money). I told them we were having problems with the ACU.

Despite my request, they only replaced the battery in the gun. The reasoning was that they tested the internal battery and it was fine. They suggested a circuit board was failing in the ACU.

Well we got it back and continued to have troubles with the ACU. I sent it back and requested that they install a new battery. Ever since then the ACU battery has lasted hours not being plugged in (much better than the minutes you mention) I'm not sure if they used a different brand or a higher capacity battery. Something changed.

This AM the unit booted up fine when plugged in. Backing up the hard drive now.

I had an ACU that wouldn't start up. You'd turn it on and you'd get the screen with the arrow, and a screen that says something like "Trimble" and then the screen would go black. i found out that if you have the power cord plugged in and you hold the green power key down for about 30 seconds it boots a second time, and then you get a screen where you can re-align the touchpad, and then it asks you if you want to rename or delete some system file - I said "rename" - and then it asks you if you want to rename or delete a second system file - I said "rename" again. Then it reboots yet again, and after that you get back to the Windows CE screen, and everything works OK!

So try plugging in the power and holding down the green power button for a minute or so. That might be all you need to get your ACU to reboot. Meanwhile, has anybody had any luck getting a replacement internal battery for the ACU? I can hardly believe Trimble wouldn't support a data collector that's only ten years old.
