I have been really getting down in the weeds, attempting to learn exactly what the raw data in .rw5 files mean.
Currently, I'm trying to connect what happens in the first "Set Collection" screen:

And the "Backsight" screen:

I believe that when I populate the first with both an OC point, and BS Point, and choose "Set Angle and Read", I get something like this:

SP,PN2,N 428317.2010,E 1618591.5090,EL999.0000,--
SP,PN500,N 428158.2660,E 1618337.8880,EL1032.3300,--
--Set Collection with Obs Order 123...321...
OC,OP500,N 428158.26600,E 1618337.88800,EL1032.330,--
LS,HI3.7800,HR5.6000
BK,OP500,BP2,BS57.5534,BC0.0000
LS,HI3.7800,HR5.6000

The first line after the --Set Collection... The OC line, shows the OP500 parameters.

But I've come across a file that starts out like this:

SP,PN500,N 428158.2660,E 1618337.8880,EL1032.3300,--
--Set Collection with Obs Order 123...321...
LS,HI5.2000,HR0.0000
BK,OP900,BP500,BS75.1052,BC0.0000
LS,HI5.2000,HR0.0000

There's only one SP record and NO OP record at all. At first I thought it was because I was using the "Set Angle", rather than "Set Angle and Read" (see the HR0.0000 in the LS record), but that makes no sense, because I always populate the OP and BS lines in the Set Collection screen.

How is it possible to produce what looks like the second file...with NO OC record?

You didn't "check the backsight" on second set.
You have to push "set angle AND read" on second screen and create the record.
"Set angle" only zeroes the instrument but doesn't record data.
The HI HR issue is separate.

Thanks. That sounds like it may fit what I did. Do the LS records relate to the line before or the line after? I think it's "after", if the sequence is OC, LS, BK, LS etc.
For this "botched" data gathering, I might just try adding the identical Back Sight information from another nearly identical traverse and see what happens.
