I bought s TDS Ranger second hand off eBay.
It had survey pro and Carlson SurvCE on it. Today it had a power failure and when it recovered SurvCE was in demo mode. Any idea how I can get it back? It looks like the reboot blew out the license number. I don't have that info since I bought it with the software on there already. Survey pro seems to have recovered ok, but SurvCE is stuck in demo mode.....
Have you tried contacting the eBay seller to see if they have the numbers?
Look at the info about your version of SurvCE under the help tab and call that number.
Explain your EBay purchase to the nice lady.
She keeps very good record of who is supposed to have what.
Carlson is one vendor that has honored third party sales when they are legit.

Hi Dan,
Call Carlson Tech Support with TDS S/N and they will definitely help, here is their email; [email protected]
Dan,
We can check it out for you. The SurvCE serial number cannot always be located by device serial number, but we can try. Call me or email with the Ranger's # and I'll check it out. It's located under the battery pack (if it's a Ranger 300 or Ranger 500) or in Control Panel > System >About.

Due to an uptick in fraudulent/pirated SurvCE serial numbers being re-sold as legitimate, Carlson changed and posted a policy regarding eBay purchases circa April, 2014:
Warning about e-Bay: Any Carlson Software products purchased on e-Bay are unauthorized copies of our products. Those software copies are not supported, warranted or upgradeable by Carlson. In addition, they may be pirated software, putting you at risk for legal action. Please buy from our authorized dealers...
The SurvCE End User License Agreement (EULA, agreed to by the original registrant) essentially states:
License Grant: Subject to the terms, conditions and limitations of this EULA, LICENSOR hereby grants End User a personal, limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, license to utilize the Software Product you have purchased.
The EULA further states:
If Carlson consents to a transfer, such transfer shall be allowed only as a one-time permanent transfer of this EULA and Software to another end user, provided the initial End User retains no copies or previous versions of the Software. The transfer must include all of the Software, including all component parts, any media and printed materials, any upgrades, this EULA, and any associated license key. The transfer may not be an indirect transfer, such as a consignment, rental or lease. No corresponding Maintenance Agreement rights shall transfer with the SOFTWARE transfer to the subsequent end user. Prior to the transfer, the subsequent end user receiving the Software from the initial End User must agree to all terms of this EULA, with the added condition that no further transfers to third parties are permitted for any reason whatsoever, and shall agree to the terms and conditions of a new Maintenance Agreement with Licensor.
If the eBay seller did not include "all component parts" (e.g. the valid SurvCE serial number), there is a fair chance we will not be able to properly recover the valid SurvCE serial number. The best course of action would be to contact the eBay seller and alert them of the power failure of the device and request the supporting SurvCE information.
There was an application on there called Sprite.exe. I had no idea what the heck that was, but when I ran it, it was a system restore program. Running that application brought everything back to normal.....I figured I would post in case anyone else had a similar issue....

Can you now go into the software, and write down all those numbers?
Yes
