Just reviewed a new technology by Google that employs 3D scanning into a phone. No kidding. Its still being evaluated and they are looking for app creator people. The hardware and API are ready just needs some creative geniuses to come up with some ideas.
I can think of 1 right off the bat. Elevation surveys. May have to calibrate it a bit, but that should be no problem for a bunch of smart guys like us! 😉
Here is a link: Google Tango
Anybody got other concepts it could be used for?

RE: Project Tango (Google) - watch the video!!

IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED THIS YOU SHOULD.
http://www.google.com/atap/projecttango/

To give you the 5 second version. Google has created a phone prototype that maps out the environment around you in real time and you capture it through the camera and sensors.

I can see some pure benefits to this technology for the disabled and for public safety, but it could add another [sarcasm]awesome [/sarcasm]layer of GIS to deal with, utilize, analyze and explain to clients, no I can't just use my google phone to prepare your condo plan.

Google is synonymous with spacial technology monopoly.... Or... they soon will be.

Technology is moving pretty quickly.

They want application developers, which I am not. My chances are slim and none. But why not give it a shot?

Since we are spacial specialists we need to know when and what each new tech is capable of. I for one do not want to be left in the dark or left out of important new developments. I believe this could very well be one of them. The video short was just enough to cause me to want to see more... however I can.
