An upcoming job is going to require different grid densities in multiple areas. I am looking for an inexpensive programs for the field crews to check the coverage in the evenings. I am preparing a base map showing the different areas, but me and my laptop are going to be on the other side of the state for 2 weeks. All they will need is to be able to import a text file and verify the lanes don't meander.

I plan to load it on my old laptop for them which runs vista.

Anyone got a suggestion?

If the duration is short, I'd be tempted to get a demo copy of Carlson. By the time the demo expires you'd be done with the job.

Most data collectors make a point plot, and in many cases you can load a basemap into that point plot. So your answer might be in your data collector.

Many data collectors also output DXF. Maybe you can just output a DXF and read that with DWG TrueView which is free.

I have no idea if it would meet your needs, but someone recently posted that they use DraftSight. Can't beat the price-free for the basic program. I downloaded it but have not explored enough to say I'm familiar with it.

There are a couple other utilities mentioned in that thread, also. And this thread discussed alternatives, as does this one.

Create the grids in your basemap, export as a DXF, and then import the DXF in the data collector. They could locate using the dxf grids.

Thanks guys. I did not think of exporting in a dxf format, and forgot that truview (which is already installed on my old laptop) would allow you to import and view that.

Not certain what DC software you are using. Topcon Magnet can create the grid in the field at any interval and align grid to required bearing.
