Okay, I've come to accept that I need to have 4, yes 4, versions of AutoCAD LDD and Civil 3D to meet the needs if my various clients. Does anyone know of an way to get AutoCAD to ask which version you would like to open a file in when you double click it? Nothing worse than opening a LDD 2009 file in Civil 3D 2014.
Thanks in advance
Hi John:
I haven't figured it out yet. I'm in the same boat. I've got 2009-2014 on my computer, and it is a pain. Fortunately, it will say which version the file is when you first open it up, so I can switch to the appropriate version. I do wish it would automatically open in the correct version though (assuming you have it on the computer).

I don't know of any solution. We have started adding the version year to our dwg names.
15607-BD1-C3D2012.dwg or 15193-TP1-C3D2010.dwg
Real pain in the backside.

🙁 RIP Richard "Sinc" Sincovec. At least his software lives on.

I don't know abou that but the IT guy at my previous employer would set up the right click menus to show all 4 acad versions with the year instead just big "A" autodessk launcher.
Basically we had four "A"s with the year next to them.
Just get TrueView it's free and it will open/convert any AutoCAD DWG to whatever version you prefer. You may lose some functionality of certain objects, but you will at least be able to open the drawings. I figured this out after having the same compatibility issues for a long time.

It's only a viewer/converter. You would still need to purchase a product to produce/edit drawings.
I think the issue is that the deliverables are specified as being a functional design drawing in a particular version of cad.
Not just proxy entities in a dxf
That would work great. Now I just need to figure out how to do that in Windows 7
Create directories for each version by year. That is the way we handle it in house. I am not sure how to determine the version prior to opening, but that shouldn't matter because if you're using it just open it and save it the version you need to work in.
Did you get it to work? See below...
