I have been using mozy.com for years now to back up my PC files into “the cloud” as well as to an external hard drive sitting on my desk. It used to cost $50 per year for unlimited storage. Now it is costing me $50 per month for 525GB.

I really like being able to access pdf’s etc from my iPhone from the previous night’s backup.

But, I do not like having to pay more per month every couple/few months as my GB data storage demands increase.

It looks like (maybe) Google Drive might only cost $10 per month for 1000GB.

Your advice?

Brad

Thanks Paul, but, from the link ...

"The most important thing to know about Amazon Glacier is that if you want to retrieve files, it takes 3 to 5 hours to complete. So this isn't for backing up and quickly retrieving a file you accidentally deleted and need right away."

I have used them all and I like Dropbox. I used to use Mozy, but I dropped it for Dropbox. I tried to use Drive when it came out, but I prefer Dropbox.

I will say that android is a far superior product in my opinion for a (field) surveyor. I can transfer files from Dropbox to my data collector via Bluetooth. I can also email a file (not a link to the file in Dropbox) with my Android to a client or myself. Iphone wouldn't do either of those when I had one about a year ago.

yeah I'd see it more of a proper archive for old stuff. do you need instant access to all 525GB of data? keep your newer stuff in a free service like drive or copy and archive older stuff to glacier - if you have a need for something on glacier you can have it next morning.

i use copy for syncing between me an a colleague, but if I was backing up my own companies data I'd be worried about the longevity of my cloud provider - if they go bust what happens?

you can do your own cloud service with a NAS drive too, most manufacturers offer some cloud service (but you need to buy the NAS)

I can get you in touch with my guy who sells space through Cloud New England. Ballpark for a two terabyte storage around $30 a month with savings for an annual contract. This also comes with backup capability and redundancy all around the world.

Google Drive all the way, baby! And instead of using Google's own sync tool, I use InSync to keep everything backed up in the cloud. Basically what I did was put all of my important project folders and other data folders into the specified Google Drive folder on my computer. Now I have all my files locally and they are also in the cloud for easy access from my laptop, phone and tablet.

Plus the price is right. $10/month for a terabyte.

Google Drive: https://www.google.com/intl/en/drive/

InSync: https://www.insynchq.com/

Also, who needs Office? I use Google Apps for Business, which integrates my documents into Drive. Any native documents, spreadsheets, etc. that I create in Google Apps do not count toward my Drive allotment.

You could try this..

https://mega.co.nz/#info

I plan on giving the free 50GB a go when my free Google Drive is full.

Google Drive

Okay, so I just signed up for my 1 TB per month for $9.99

And I have installed Google Drive onto my PC and my iPhone.

Currently I am 'copying' all 418 GB of my critical data files to the C:Google Drive location.

I wonder if I should be 'moving' them instead??

Am I duplicating 418 GB + 418 GB onto my hard drive now??

I will find out soon enough:

My baby steps logic, is this:

(1) make sure I like Google Drive (GD poor acronym) before I quit Mozy.

(2) ...

... never mind

Google Drive

It sounds like you are duplicating what's on your hard drive already. Drive is likely synchronizing to it's own folder, so you are sending the files up and they are coming back down in another location.

In my case, I had all my data files on a 2nd local hard drive. While setting up Drive, I specified the location of the synchronized files on the 2nd drive, then moved all of my data files into that new Drive folder. Now I have my data files on my local drive and in Google Drive. It's not only easier to access my files from pretty much anywhere, but it also becomes a cloud backup.

🙂

Google Drive

OH, I see now. I went back and read your post again. Looks like you copied your original files into the Google Drive folder instead of moving.

Wendell> Just to Clarify??

Am I supposed to move my files to the google drive folder on my computer? So, should all the files that I want to access be moved to the google drive folder?

It's a little scary for me :-0

Yup, I am in process for about 18 hours now...

It is done on my PC and I am using the files like normal.

But it is taking a while to for Google to sync up and fill all the folders with my files on-line.

Currently it says syncing 12567 of 193058...

tick tock...

Are you going to have to change your cad programs so they access the correct drive now?
