Microsoft Word is nuts...

Although I was a longtime fan of Word Perfect I have been scourged and beaten by Bill Gates and his cronies to use MSWord. The client likes it, too.

Anyway, I'm about halfway through writing 75 or 80 easement descriptions for a power transmission route...and I noticed the aggrevating squiggly that MSWord puts under words that it "thinks" are misspelt.

OK...sometimes it really is misspelled. I'm getting used to it putting squigglies under bearings...but it "likes" the word "Northwest" (no squiggly)...and doesn't like the word "Northeast" (squiggly). WTF!o.O

At first I thought maybe it was missing a return, or had too many in front or behind it. Nope. It suggests I drop the upper-case "N". I can put Northwest in all day long, but it don't like Northeast...

I bet Mr. Karoly could suggest the perfect Sunday liquid imbiberance that would make it all go away.

They had to drag me kicking and screaming from Wordperfect to Word.... but, you give up and go on!

You can add words to your custom dictionary and make those squigly lines go away. Just be sure you don't mis-spell any! Next time you create a document, Word will recognize the new text as correctly spelt.

I have a friend who just added words all willy-nilly to his dictionary, thinking the words were correctly spelled. Now when he does spell check, his documents are perfect! (except to those of us that follow up and read them)

I can't get my MS Word to behave as you describe. Generally I don't turn on the wavy underlining of possible errors, but I turned it on to see whether it has trouble with either Northeast or Northwest, and it doesn't. Office 2010 for the Mac. I also have Office 2011 on a Windows platform, and might check that, too, but first: Can't you add words to the dictionary so the spell checker won't object to them?

Cheers,
Henry

It's always a riot to fool around with the auto-correct so when someone types NORTHERLY, the auto-correct changes it to SOUTHERLY.

Sure...3 oz of Gin, 1/2 oz of Vermouth, stirred with ice then strained into a chilled glass. One of those and you don't care anymore.

I don't do that the day before a strenuous day (tomorrow), though.

You can right click on the words with squiggly lines under them and choose ignore and it kills the squiggly line.

Sometimes in descriptions it doesn't like the way we write legals, it will put a green squiggly line under the whole offensive (to it) sentence. You can ignore those too.

I sometimes try to think like the person writing the program. Be careful with this, as it might make your head hurt.:woot:

When you do this, you will realize that not everyone is perfect, make the appropriate adjustments and move on.

Life's to short to bang your head over a program not understanding the things that you do.

Take a deep breath, count to 10 and it will all be better....:-D

Cheers,

Radar

Dave

I can't do the ice or vermouth..but a square Bombay Dry Gin bottle does fit the hand nicely.

Seriously, I know I can turn off all that crap in Word...but it's gettin' like trying to log on the internet. You gotta spend 30 minutes clickin' on stuff (no, I don't want to update my Adobe right now!..) just to get to what you wanted.

frusteratin'..

Paden

if you are talking quality liquor...

Neat is never wrong.

If John Wayne walked into a bar in the old west and asked for a Cosmo they probably would've either laughed uproariously which would've cause a gun fight or just beat him up.

I'll have a Whiskey and leave the bottle. Notice the bar tender doesn't ask if you want ice.

...

Yeah, I know, computers are getting increasingly annoying. I don't want to upgrade the Acrobat Reader because the old one is better and the new one sucks but it keeps asking me anyway. And I don't want to upgrade the Java thing because the web based expense claim software doesn't work on it and I would really like to get my expenses reimbursed.

I despise MS Word, which is why I switched to Open Office. If someone wants something in Word I can save it in a word format although admittedly sometimes it doesn't work well. In that case I just cut and paste a legal into an email and let er rip.

Me again, having experimented with the Windows copy. It does what you first described. Unfortunately, the correction seems to be grammar-based rather than spelling-based, so adding "Northeast" to the custom dictionary doesn't help. If I find a quick fix I'll let you know. A temporary fix is to go in to the grammar checker at the first occurrence, and check "Ignore Rule." That will hold you for the session, but I haven't yet found a way to make it more nearly permanent. Sorry.

Cheers,
Henry

If I remember correctly, Word has two checkers, one for grammar (squiggly green line) and one for spelling (squiggly red line). Either one or both (or neither) may be turned on or off. So, if one does not like the grammar checker, simply turn it off...... Also, as mentioned above, unrecognized words can be added to the dictionary, just make sure they are spelled correctly first....

Is that stuff any good? A beer brewed on the edge of the Mojave desert doesn't strike me as appealing...

Spelling and Grammar

Turn off the grammar checking (that's the green wiggle)

I also get peeved with Word trying to guess and change words as I type, So I turn off autocorrect also

The word correct hasn't screwed me up YET. (I typically seem to type fast enough that the correction takes place after I have the word typed and I had it wrong [ex teh vs the]) Trust me, not a fan of MS in general, lots of things in specific, but word correct isn't one of them at this time......

Say what you will about MS Word. Although I use it everyday I HATE Civil efing 3D with a PASSION!!!. No, I can't switch to Carlson or something else. We need the MAP functions and my boss wants us all on the same softwire. The others rarely need surveying functions and dont have to deal with them DAMNED styles. I long for LDD 8. I miss my old P-90 and Survey Complete.

This thread has been very entertaining. Many have complained about attempts to change their spelling and grammar by entering sentences with numerous spelling and grammar errors.

Sew, less role awn two sum ding series.

updating in general

Dave:

I agree with you that updating is a pain in the butt, but you should keep in mind that there are sometimes good reasons for those updates.

For Adobe Reader, there are application crash security vulnerabilities that hackers can use to gain access: Read me.

Anyway, just my $0.02.

You have given me some fine ideas. Go to a friends computer, that writes up his sermons, and "Fix" his auto correct, so that when he types Christ, it automatically fills in THE DEVIL. I know, it is bad. But I can hardly wait! He will sure wonder!

🙂 snort!
