Hi All. I was wondering if a piece of software I am coding is of interest to anyone here.
It is a standalone .exe for a Windows PC that will load up a CAD DXF file graphically and enable the user to snap onto points in sequence and create a text-file (eg: .csv ) of coordinates that can then be uploaded into a Controller ready for Staking them on site. This app does not require a CAD program on the users PC. THE GUI is like CAD with zooming, panning etc..
I know a lot of Controllers will accept a DXF or DWG file direct but usually the user needs to apply some editing before uploading to a Controller and therefore needs a CAD program too.
Any opinions on this or any pointers is appreciated.
Thanks for your time.
Mike
Hi Mike,
I doubt that there will be a market for land surveyors with this software as all surveyors already have CAD software typically, Civil 3D or Carlson that can generate csv coordinate files. I'm curious though, is there some other market that you have found that needs this software?
I would use that program. I am old school and have a healthy distrust of Acad files. Many times I have picked off some bldg corners and checked the setback only to find it encroaching 0.5'+/- or a face of curb BC that calcs 20.8' to CL instead of 20.0' (bad drafting?). Your program would save me the eye strain of picking off points that I need to verify. My guess is the design gets done without being tied to real boundary coordinates which of course is where I have to start. Sometimes the Acad file is okay but I always check it and your list of coords with point numbers would be great. Will your program also have a hardcopy drawing with the point numbers?
Hi Mike
we stake from the dxf-files files and rarely stake solitaire points, mostly use the stake line routine.
But interested to hear in what program language you’re coding.
Do you handle different units: meter, feet?
hi Matt,
The market I was thinking of would be freelance setting-out (stakeout) guys that may not have a CAD software on site, probably working from paper prints of design drawings in a site cabin.
@landbutcher464mhz My program will create markers on each location selected (an "X" with a number) and upon creating the ascii file can also save the marked points on-screen that could be printed on paper.
Hi Chris my software will output in whatever the units the CAD file is in (with an option to ouput in metres where the file is in millimetres).
My software is currently coded in Visual Basic 6 but I intend (if enough interest is shown) to re-code it in VB .Net
The .exe will run under Windows
