Thought I would share a tip for those who have upgraded their Captivate software to the new firmware version. If your DC doesn't have the built in CDMA modem to connect to the internet you can now use an external WiFi device like Verizon's JetPack. First you need to go to Settings>System>Regional>Others tab and there is a new check box to "Switch WLAN". Check this and OK. This stabilizes the WiFi connection which previously would constantly drop and reconnect making it impossible to run a network rover. The next trick which is what I fought with is on the Windows side when you connect to the WiFi device. I had been running the setup with the older CS15 and for that device to connect I had to make the WiFi connection open with no password on the JetPack. With Captivate v2.30 it requires a secure connection so edit the settings of your WiFi broadcast device to add a password and you'll be all set. Hopefully this will save someone the headaches I went through last week getting a new CS20 up and running on the network. Thanks.

I have not but it looks like it and a couple other additions will be very useful. I'm probably more excited about the new 48 character length in descriptions than anything else. The added coding for points stored while creating lines should make Autodesk Description Key users happy also.

Cameron,
We are fairly new to using Leica equipment but so far have liked it quite a bit.
We have version 2.2 on ours and wondering if its worth it to go to 2.3.
Also our dealer has done the upgrades in the past - I can't imagine they are that difficult but is it a fairly routine process to update the CS20 and the transits?

Thanks in advance - I actually have SIM cards for the modems or I would try what you suggested.

I saw in the release notes of the update that with the lengthening of the descriptions to 48 characters if you create a point with a description of 16+ characters the job will no longer be backwards compatible with prior versions of Captivate and/or Viva. This could cause issues if you have multiple equipment setups not all running the current version.

The updates are easy enough to do yourself. Just make sure to load the .fw file into the "System" folder on the SD card and follow the steps. It sounds silly but I've had much better success updating firmware using a Leica branded SD card.
