Walked into my research office at LSU this morning and noticed that my computer screen was still on and fully lit up. I have one screen filled up with an advertisement for "Perfect Birthday Cake for Children," and a Notepad text window on the other screen informing me that:

"What happened to your files ?
All of your files were protected by a strong encryption with RSA-2048 using CryptoWall."

Since I did NOT download any files or packages before I left last night, it's a mystery how this got into my machine. The LSU Network people are now investigating this.

Thank goodness I had it all backed up on another machine!

I have Windows 7 running on my machine. HOWEVER, my Network Manager came in and disconnected it from the network and started diddling with my machine. He discovered that someone had been on my machine after normal working hours last night! There was hours' worth of web browsing records listed on my machine, none of which I had ever looked at.

Moral of the story: Lock your computer when you leave for the day.

Screwed by someone with a Master Key.

Best make certain that the virus is not also sitting on your backup drive, waiting to infect whatever machine you put the files on to.
