Hello. I believe this topic has been answered previously, so apologies up front. I recently turned up my HP 48 with TDS SURVEY PRO loaded. When I tried to open it up, I got a message "invalid card data". Anybody with an excellent memory out there to help remedy my situation?

Thanks

Bill

I would try to swap the cards in the slots at the back and try to boot it, then swap them again

When was the last time you changed the battery on the data card?

The card can cause that message when more power is needed to hold all the data.

Install new batteries and turn it on until the message goes away.

If possible, download your files if not downloaded already, dump the data and re install or format the empty card.

I use SMI and the data card can get finicky when it is loaded with a lot of files.

The cards that do not have a battery use power from the batteries in the HP48 and a 1MB card full of files can put a strain on the available power supply.

It can take a change of batteries more often.

Also, when changing batteries in the HP48, don't take over 15 to 20 seconds to change the batteries or you can possibly loose or corrupt the information in the card.

The same can happen if the HP48 shut down during use because the batteries were drained and it was a long time before new batteries were installed.

Data cards will not act the same way. They were were produced by several sources and styles. Some will not work with some program cards while having no problem with others.

good luck

Sometimes they will do that if they cards don't make a good connection. They could be a little corroded. I wouldn't be surprised if it's been setting up for long time.

The advice above about putting fresh batteries in the calculator and keeping it on for an extended period of time is a good first start. You can do this by setting an alarm to go off every 5 minutes. This is the default shutoff time for an inactive calculator.

The type of battery that is in the cards that do not have a replaceable battery is one that charges from the calculator batteries. You need to keep it on for a while after putting fresh batteries in for that to happen. You will know that the RAM card batteries have been sufficiently refreshed when the warning about the data card does not appear when you turn the calculator on.

To refresh the install of the program:
Press and hold the [ON] key, add the [A] Key and then the [F]. When you release the buttons, the calculator will display a message "Try to recover memory". Select [NO].

After keyboard control returns, press the [ON] then add the [SPC]. When you release the buttons, the calculator should beep and go off. This restores the calculator to factory defaults.

Then put the program card in Port 2 where the memory card normally lives. Turn the calculator on and type [alpha] (this is the key above the left-shift key), [alpha] [TDS48] and press [Enter]

The calculator should display [Installing Library]. Turn off the calculator and move the Survey Pro card back to Port 1 and re-install the memory card in Port 2.

If you want to totally clear and reformat the memory, after you have re-installed the TDS program, you can type the following command: [Alpah][Alpah]

[Alpha] (this puts the calculator in lower-case alpha mode). Then type [initram]- should be all lower case. Press [Enter] This will reformat the card.

Thanks to all who answered my query about TDS. I'll give it a try. It's an old calculator/data collector. I hope all have a great Memorial Day.

Thanks,

Bill
