Does anyone know where I can get the big rubber band that operates this plotter? Mine is starting to fray. Or is it time for a new plotter?
I found one on ebay.
The kit came with tools .
That was several years ago but it was a good deal and worked out fine.
Is it the Carriage belt? I see that on there, but no mention of any tools to repair.
what i got was the carriage belt.
i just looked on ebay and checked my old email.
i got it from LPS.
go to www.hppartsurfer.com that is where I get all my replacement parts, including the belt for an HP 450 and 500. That site will direct you to LPS
As stated, the HP partssurfer or ebay. I've done three.
You will need a several Torx screwdrivers, best a small cheap set from the local hardware store. I think #10, #15, and maybe #20 but a set will keep the trips down.
Do you also need instructions? I have the service manual in pdf format.
The process is really simple, but when you look in the service manual for changing the belt, it works you backwards through the process and you keep having to go to the previous item to be removed. Make a list working backwards from the belt to removing the cover FIRST! Getting the covers off is the hard part. Don't pull or break the ribbon cable leading from the circuit board to the control panel. The control panel is held in to the inside of right cover with plastic squeeze clips. When you get it off, the control panel slips into a slot in the metal chassis so you don't need to disconnect it.
Be sure to clean out the rubber shreds and particularly the grooves in the motor and idler pully. They usually get full of rubber.
Good luck
Was waiting for Tyler to jump in, he sent me a copy of the service manual, I am glad he did, without it, the job would have been much harder.

If it is like the 500's & 800's; the worst part is trying to get the spring loaded pulley that keeps the belt under tension back where it belongs. Seems like I needed smaller fingers and a third hand.
A third hand would be handy for most projects but chewing gum and walking is becoming a chore. A third hand would result in overload.

Don't forget to thoroughly clean out the spittoon while you have the covers off. If it hasn't been cleaned out before, I promise that it will need it soon.
Take your time, this will take more than 10 minutes. Ditto on cleaning the pulley and motor groves. I had to (carefully) scrape the crud off with a knife before I could get it clean.
Plotter worked like a champ when done, though. SMOOTH. Better than it had in years.
Belts are fairly cheap. I picked one up for around $35 online.
Thanks you all, for the info. I ordered up a belt--made of Kevlar from ebay. Should be here in a few days.
Hey Tyler, yeah..if you have the service manual handy, I'd take it.
Thanks!
