Hi
Anyone familiar with connecting a Garmin GPSmap62 with ArcGIS for down- & uploading data.
ArcGIS needs a serial com port to communicate, the Garmin has only usb.
here"s what the ArcGIS help file says:
"ArcMap's GPS toolbar requires a communications (COM) port connection. The GPS Connection Setup dialog box will not recognize a GPS device connected via Universal Serial Bus (USB) port. Some GPS device manufacturers provide drivers to map the USB connection to a virtual COM port that then can be used. Bluetooth devices also can be configured to use a virtual COM port."

No luck so far ... the topic with the virtual com ports has been discussed before.
What port number does ArcGIS need? How to set it in Win7?

We see the unit connected in Windows explorer and can transfer files, but not in ArcGIS.

This is a question from another office, I have neither the unit neither the ArcGIS installed on my pc.

thanks,
Christof.

This site has pretty clear instructions.

edit: Which ArcGIS version are you using? We added support for port numbers higher than 9 at 10.0 SP4 / 10.1. The virtual COM port emulators can use very large port numbers, like 75.

I searched the Garmin Support FAQs for [Spanner + Windows 7] and found:

06/03/2013

Spanner is designed to be used with Windows XP. A replacement for Spanner has been made available for use with newer versions of Windows. The GPSGate Client application has all the same basic features as Spanner with the ability to use on Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000*, NT*, ME*, and 98*.

That page provides a link to GPSGate Client.

The download page sez "GpsGate Client Express for Windows is free for use without time limitations."

Look up Garmin+Minnesota+DNR

They have a program that is free, and there is an email group user support effort.

Garmin GPS to ArcGIS needs virtual com port FIXED!

No joy with Spanner and GPSGateClient.
But the Minnesota DNRGPS application does the trick for us.

http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/mis/gis/DNRGPS/DNRGPS.html

Thanks again for your help.

Christof.
