Drawing Legend Question

I'm finally getting around to addressing a review on rather large and extensive ROS I drafted last winter. Eight sheets in total including the first two which are Index sheets, the second sheet containing all the details on recovered monuments, line tables, areas, notes and Legend. Mind you this survey covers pole lines in about four plus sections. The scale on the index sheet is 1:500 to get everything to fit and it's tight. All subsequent sheets are at 1:100. Here is the problem. The reviewer wants the legend on each and every sheet. The legend is huge, six different symbols, six different referenced records and ten line types. There simply isn't room on any of the other sheets to fit this legend. I'm setting up a meeting to talk about this and a couple of other requests from them that I just don't feel are necessary nor like. In a perfect world, sure, the legend repeated on every sheet would be nice, but it's not always practical. I always strive for simplicity and clarity and it feels like the reviewers have the opposite mission.

What say you??ÿ

Add the legend as a non scaled image, boom.

Limit the size to what fits, and that's all you can do, a legend isn't a legal requirement on everything you draft or look at, unless the contract says so anyway.

And if you're meeting with the reviewer, ask them if they have an example of this in a similar drawing so you can peek at what has been.?ÿ Just to make sure you're not forging new directions at your cost when?ÿ its not necessary.

Some of my projects last year utilized DOT plans. Their legend is on one page and the entire plan set could comprise thirty or forty pages. My only complaint is that the legend is a standard insert for every project so not all items in the legend may appear on the plans. It takes a while to get familiar, but nobody said there has to be immediate understanding of the work represented. It requires some study and sometimes a great deal of study to become familiar with what is represented.

It would seem simple enough to take the legend page out of the plan set and keep it alongside the other pages that are being reviewed. Beyond that, I cannot understand how a reviewer can dictate how you should make your presentation, especially after all the work you did.?ÿ

If there is room and it wouldn't take much time, I show the following of each sheet with boundaries being mapped:

I see no point on having a legend on a sheet which contains no items referenced on the legend, much less on a sheet that is wholly monument tables, and other assorted text items. Tell the reviewer I said so.?ÿ?ÿ

@norman-oklahoma I won't use "norman-oklahoma said" as my big gun unless it gets ugly.?ÿ

@norman-oklahoma This was my training as well.?ÿ Legends, if shown on each sheet, should contain only those items that exist on that sheet.

That being said, if constrained for space, I think a comprehensive legend on one sheet is more than serviceable.

@williwaw?ÿ According to statutes the ROS is not subject to any review or platting standards, its solely a product prepared by an?ÿ LS to show a material discrepancy in a record plat or for describing corners set for the first time such as unsurveyed deeds or remonumented corners of record.?ÿ ?ÿ That said the landowner that is knowledgeable or used to having platting review powers (like the State or BIA trustee) may have some willingness or perceived authority to provide input, but it really is a document prepared by the surveyor and directly recorded.?ÿ ?ÿThat said, work with your reviewer, but they do not hold a platting standard requirement to enforce.?ÿ ?ÿMy time as either an LS preparing a ROS or as the BILS reviewing ROS documents focus was providing clear understandable information about the issue needing to be explained on the ROS.?ÿ Style and platting format can and does vary widely, the important thing is the information is all there and factually correct and understandable.?ÿ I have many times used the referenced legend on sheets that are crowded .?ÿ ?ÿSee Legend on Sheet 2 or whatever.?ÿ ?ÿI prefer to have a legend?ÿ on each sheet, and only contain legend items pertinent to that sheet, but see no requirement for it if there is cause like a crowded sheet.?ÿ ?ÿMy two cents.?ÿ?ÿ
