How can I change the background color in paper space?

It's gray, and when I change it from white to black, it remains gray.
The crosshairs are set to white, but display black, when I change it to green, it turns magenta.

OK I GOT IT!

I found a tiny little 8 x 10.5 black box, in the bottom left corner of my gray screen, that is the paper space.

But I want a bigger sheet for the plotter, so you must hit
QUICK VIEW LAYOUTS
NEW LAYOUT
right click the new layout, then click
PAGE SETUP MANAGER
from there you see your list of printing devices, choose the plotter and correct paper size and viola!
there is another little black box of the correct size (layout2)
