I??ve searched and researched BricsCAD a bit and it seems like a solid alternative to AutoCAD. Has anyone had long term usage and or success with the software? Issues, opinions?
Thanks
Garth
I've been using BricsCAD for about 4 years.?ÿ It's almost an AutoCAD clone (but with a more robust AutoLISP implementation), so if you're comfortable using bare-bones AutoCAD you should be able to use BricsCAD easily.?ÿ On the other hand, if you're used to something like C3D you'll find that BricsCAD alone won't get the job done.?ÿ There are survey-specific add-ons for BricsCAD, but I'm not familiar with them.
Right on. I’m starting a small company and I’m looking to save where I can. I’ve been using Microstation for 15 years but I need to be dwg transferable for most situations. I’m planning on just sitting down with the software and digging in. For most of my survey needs I’ll be 2D. I’ve looked at some of the add on apps for topo line work etc. and they look good in theory. I appreciate the feed back.
Cheers
Garth
I bought Bricscad and used it with (now defunct) Eagle Point 12 years ago when I started a surveying business.?ÿ I really liked Bricscad, but I did enough commercial/heavy construction layout that I was receiving drawings from architects and engineers that had Autodesk entities that sometimes didn't translate.?ÿ I bought Autocad in pretty short order, because the potential cost of one missed dimension or annotation that somehow didn't translate was just too high.
If I was in a line of work that didn't need to do a lot of Autodesk/Civil3D handoffs, I'd give it a look.?ÿ I remember it being faster and more nimble than Autocad.
Good to know. Primarily I’m gonna focus on residential boundary/spot surveys to get my company started. I have a few contacts within the title company business that I’m gonna try and emphasize at the beginning. My thoughts were that BricsCAD would be a good starting point. I appreciate the input.
We've used Bricscad for?ÿ several years with good results.?ÿ
As mentioned, receiving other .dwgs with proxies and other smart objects can be a pain, but for general drafting it works great.?ÿ?ÿ
If someone would create a Land Desktop type addon, it would be an awesome alternative to Civil3d.
If you do get it, look up the "pointsin" lisp to import your survey data.
If you don't need the survey routines, and just teh drafting, Carlson also now sells their iCad engine separate.?ÿ We have it for the draftsman, and 95% of the time it gets the job done.
Carlson IntelliCAD And BricsCAD are the two primary pieces of software I’m looking into..Thanks for the input
I've got Carlson Intellicad. Never have used Briscad. Carlson is better than LDD which I moved from because of cost and lack of support. Carlson support is the best I've ever had an opportunity to use. You could end up talking to Carlson himself.
Carlson survey with intellicad is your best option. You can't beat it for the price.
You'll have everything you need and more. There's really no need to upgrade versions for several years.
I only upgrade every year or so for the intellicad update.

I’m starting to lean that way. Is the Survey package they sell generally going to let me do most field to finish operations or did you also buy other packages?
Is the linework point dependent or are the lines and points separate objects?
Separate is the simplest answer. There are some linking features, very customizable
