When I upgraded to Acad 2011 and tried to install it on my HP computer, it gave me an Error 1406 having to do with something in the registry. I called tech support and never got straight answer. They told me to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 7 Professional. I did and the problem persisted. I checked website, and have talked to tech support 3 times. So I just stayed with 2010. 4 months ago I tried 2012, and same problem. Now I just tried 2013 and same problem.

Not good.

Not sure if applicable to vanilla AutoCad, but I just happened to browse this page yesterday...upgrading to 2013 this week.
BTW, we've never had a C3D (2008-2012) install issue on any Dell, HP, Asus, Toshiba, Sony or Gateway machine running Win7 Home or Pro.

You may have already seen this page...

Check computer requirements for AutoCAD may need a newer processor of you loaded it on a older Computer. One of the reason I switch to IntelliCAD.

Thanks. I did that. It is a registry error during installation.

Have you been here? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838687

Have you tried the Acad forums? I've gotten a few good answers there from time to time.

I usually just "google" the complete error code or message. Sometimes that might get ya pointed in the right direction.

I suggest re-formatting your hard drive, then try installing it again. My HP computer has a recovery option, not the windows restore feature!

After recovery, the computer is like the day you bought it.

You will have to re-install all software that did not come pre-installed on the computer.

Try uninstalling AutoCad, then run CCleaner to fix any registry issues. Then reinstall.

Sometimes (most of the time) running the uninstallers still leaves a bunch of crap in the registry. CCleaner should remove the leftover crap for you.

It may have to do with older acad installations. You might try removing older versions before installing the newer one as a last resort if you won't need them anymore.
It don't make any sense, but I had this problem before with the embedded acad versions of carlson. However, I don't remember the error code.

I recently bought a new computer, because my 6 year old would not successfully install Civil 3D 2013. The new one works fine with C3D, at least with the simple drawings I've used so far. With its Intel(r) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU its much faster than the old one.

I get a little bit concerned when people recommend CCleaner... I've had it screw things up. But I haven't tried it in several years, so maybe it's better now...?

Only thing I've found that indicates this error is that you might be using 32-bit Win7...? I don't recommend that under any circumstances, but is it what you're doing?

If so, the only thing I can think of is you have an old version C://Windows/System32/msi.dll (look in Properties->Details to determine the version). If this is anything less than version 3, you need to download the latest version from Microsoft. Hopefully that fixes the issue.

If that's not it, then I'm at a loss... Definitely, upgrading to Pro won't fix this problem. Shame on Autodesk tech support for even suggesting it.

I had a similar problem with another software, a registry error. The solution was to right click the executable, go to properties, select the compatibility tab, and select:

1) Run this program in compatibility mode
2) Run this program as administrator

It worked fine after that.

CCleaner works like a charm. Reformatting a hard drive is the wrong answer...

tried and true option

btw, there are many issues that autodesk has never resolved with cad
the print engine in it's entirety is just one
