Wanted to get some feedback on 3d scanning (terrestrial lidar) workflow and deliverables.

For our architectural/mechanical applications, we perform a series of scans with our TX8, and auto register in Realworks.

From there we:

-export gridded e57

-auto extract indoor features to create separate regions and export .e57

-create additional regions for piping systems and export .e57

-auto extract cylinders for the piping system regions

-create mesh of auto extracted cylinders, and export to dwg as #1 deliverable

-import gridded .e57 to ReCap and save as #2 deliverable

-delete all point cloud points, but retain mirror balls, and import region .e57 files and save as #3 deliverable (limits the mechanical rooms to the walls, floors and they system they want to work on)

I do not have an EdgeWise license yet, but plan on getting one to assist in the auto-extraction.  Until I can get EdgeWise, does anyone have any suggestions on better workflows and/or deliverables?

I'm not trying to learn Revit, but if that is what is typically delivered for a 3d scanning project, then I will start taking some courses.  We do use the 3d scanner for topo sometimes (pad flatness, busy roads, etc...), but think we have that process down.

Any insight into what others are delivering from 3d scan projects, and how they perform them is much appreciated.

brad
