A friend of mine just sent me this and asked if I had ever seen these before. I have not, but I guessed they might be drone targets. Though he assures me the number written next to it is not close to the elevation. (It's off by 10 ft or more.) That is, unless he is on NAVD 88 and these "targets" are some other datum.

Looks just like the ones I saw last year. I assumed they were drone targets. Way too small for regular aerial targets.

Could be drone, could be for low level imagery from a helicopter, could be who knows what?

We used ones about that size in early 90's for mapping imagery with full size aerial camera mounted in a helicopter.

Other thing to keep in mind, cameras are way better these days, even with fixed wing at higher altitudes, it is very rare to use the sizes of targets we used years ago with film, I haven't used any 12" wide or wider targets in quite a few years now. We can often get by with a 4" wide leg x 3' long these days.

They could be for mobile scanning.

Are they at set intervals along shoulder of roadway?

What those guys said...I've used targets that size for both mobile lidar and low level helicopter photogrammetry.

Thanks Dan. Best we could figure out it is for some kind of mobile data collection, from whom and why begs the question. There is also a remote airplane club that uses the fields, could be for members who have drones. I'll let you know.

I made an awesome template for those put of azek and plywood. I have a 2.5 inch magnail in the middle to line it up with a set mag. I use it for mobile secondary points and for static scans when in a good area.
