I remember a tv series called "Cheyenne" back in the late '50s.?ÿ?ÿ I never got to watch it probably due to it being aired later in the evening.?ÿ But my older sister always watched it...and even had a picture of Clint whoever that starred in the series hanging on her bedroom wall.

The reason I remember it so well is that Momma Cash overheard my sister Sharon tell one of her friends she thought the guy in Cheyenne was "good looking"....so Momma put a stop to her watching the show and made her take down the picture.

I guess in 1959 it was inappropriate for a 14 year old girl to think someone was "good looking".

?ÿ

My haven't things changed in sixty years... ??ÿ

Possibly the last show featuring a beatnik was The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis. ?ÿThere were plenty of pretty girls on that show that are nearing 80 now.

Anyone remember Naked City? ?ÿIt was not at all what one might expect today, based on the name alone.

I don't guess I caught Naked City on its first airing.?ÿ The name alone probably prompted my folks to keep the tube turned off for the show.

But a few years later (probably '67 or so) we were blessed with a couple of local UHF television channels to supplement the 3 VHF networks.?ÿ One in particular aired youth-oriented shows like Where The Action Is along with Hullabaloo and Shindig re-runs...sorta like MTV for the sixties.?ÿ Anyway late at night they showed re-runs of Outer Limits, The Twilight Zone and others, including Naked City.

It was a good way to keep us young hippies in my buddy's garage watching TV while we smoked weed...kept us off the streets. ??ÿ

On our MeTV channel, Leave it to Beaver leads into Perry Mason in the mornings. That Cleaver family was a well-to-do bunch. Boys had their own bathroom adjoining their bedroom and Ward had a casual wardrobe in addition to his business suits. I didn't grow up that way.

Looking back, I wonder if early shows were about upscale people because most tvs were owned by upscale people or for some more innocent reason. Was Roseann the first series about folks who struggled to make ends meet?

I would assume the relatively "positive" themes of early TV programs had a lot to do with the sponsors.?ÿ And with a population of adult folks that had first hand memories of the depression and a world war no one wanted to see the raw reality of strife.?ÿ Television was being funded by sponsors that wanted the audience to "feel good" as they watched the sponsor's products scroll past during commercials.?ÿ Drama was limited to Packy falling in a well or Beaver worrying about his crush on Miss Canfield.?ÿ And of course everything had to "make it back home" by the end of the episode.

Although mystery and drama has always been a close second, comedy is the one enduring theme that sells TV time.?ÿ The iconic "Laugh In" was originally a one-shot low-budget special.?ÿ It was just a mess of stand-up vaudevillian comics having fun.?ÿ Its reviews caught everybody by surprise and the producers scrambled to get together a regular show.?ÿ Air time for sponsors was selling for as much as the big time anchors of the day like Ed Sullivan.?ÿ

Like it or not advertising was (and is) the driving force behind what emanates from our screens.?ÿ

Maynard G.?ÿKrebs?ÿis the "beatnik" sidekick of the title character in the U.S. television sitcom The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis, which aired on CBS from 1959 to 1963.

Never even heard of Naked City until today. I prefer more educational shows like "The Munsters" and "Beavis and Butt-Head" both of which are full of impossible anomalies.?ÿ ? ?ÿ

Oh yea, love the "Gong Show" too.

Edit: add "Amos n Andy"

Another great show from the 50's was "Queen for a Day". ?ÿAnd, no, it did not involve anything similar to what such a show might feature today.

....Was Roseann the first series about folks who struggled to make ends meet?

There was All in the Family -Archie was working class- and it's spin-0ff Good Times with the family scraping by in the "projects". And I'm thinking of Rockford Files where the tutular character was living in a trailer and always one step ahead of the repo man. All long before Roseanne.?ÿ

I think the reason that most programs depict well off people is because that allows the characters the freedom to be wherever the story needs them to be at whatever time of day the story wants them there. It also allows for product placement of all the newest and most fashionable clothes, cars, and gadgets in their homes and driveways.
