'El Chapo' escapes

Shocker alert: The "colorful" kingpin of the enterprising Sinaloa drug cartel apparently has escaped his maximum security confines for a second time, as reported early Sunday by the Mexican authorities. El Chapo (Shorty) first escaped a newly built maximum security prison built mainly for his incarceration in 2001. After his escape is was determined that the construction company that built the prison, along with most of the guards, were on the druglord's payroll.

His latest trip to the cooler began in 2014 after a much publicized arrest by Mexican authorities aided by the U.S. At the time authorities were quick to point out that another escape would be imposible. Well, apparently the impossible has indeed occurred.

It should be pointed out that there is absolutely no truth to any rumors that El Chapo is planning to 'drop in' unannounced on presidential hopeful Donald Trump for a friendly one-on-one chat.

Or that he is headed for San Francisco. (I'm sorry, that probably eased over into politics).

He was there just long enough for the government to pick up his hospital tab, provide his therapy and to heal properly....

He escaped by a 1 mile long tunnel INTO his shower. That took some precise engineering and some precise underground surveying.

I would have loved some of that sophisticated equipment in my spelunking days - instead we had compass and tape to map all those passages underground. They sure have advanced those GPS signals:stakeout:

May have used GPS for initial control and staking the "house under construction" used to hide the exit of the tunnel. Establishing the direction and distance to the prison building and control for the dig? That would be a different story.

There is alot of technology in today's Horizontal direction drilling. You can just walk with the receiver and the drill bit will follow you.

I saw a photo on the news this morning of one of Guzman's tunnels. If it was indeed the one through which he made his most recent escape, it appeared to be a steel carrier pipe, probably placed with the help of directional boring equipment. However they did it, they did it right.

On a side note: Have you ever wondered why more inmates don't escape in the US? I personally don't think it's because the prisons are so secure....I think it's because the prisons are nice and comfortable...Who would want to escape when you've got AC, three hots and a cot? Oh...and internet, too.

He is an inexperienced drug lord, per se.
Pablo Escobar at least built his own prison.

ps: Ott, don't you dare give me a "thumbs down" on this!

I got that. Just saying there was more to the effort than the press understands. Also shows the level of corruption that allows a tunneling operation requiring this level of coordination. Tunnel one mile long and five feet high with a thirty foot vertical shaft. That requires heavy equipment that makes noise.

Stunned that the "maximum security" prison in Mexico doesn't tow a ground penetrating radar around the perimeter on a regular basis.

I guess the big question is did they use static GPS, or a network. You will have to pay the guards are bigger bid to set a GPS unit for a few hours, also that is more of a risk of being caught. When digging an escape tunnel does the extra tenth matter?
