Yes, thank you, Bill, it may be a good idea for me to clarify how that works.

Using the "reply" button will simply add the mention of the member you are replying to (this post is a good example of that).

This is an example of using the "quote" button. It includes a mention of the member I'm quoting and shows their full post.

This is an example of highlighting a specific portion of a member's post, then clicking on the quote button that appears directly below it. It mentions the member I'm replying to and quotes only the text I highlighted. I think a lot of people don't realize they have this option. 🙂

Even now and moving forward, however, I would still like to hear your thoughts as you use the forums. Not just with this particular issue, but with any issue. I'm trying my best to shape this community in a way that we all can enjoy, while also considering the behind-the-scenes aspects of it. It's certainly a balance and you all help me to find it.

I'm interested what your thoughts are on how old threads can be resurrected?

Some forums it seems don't allow threads past a certain age, or having passed a certain period of inactivity, to be responded to.

I've noticed lately quite a few really old threads being re-lit.

Sometimes something worthwhile comes of it, other times, not so much.

Sometimes the people involved have long since disappeared anyway.

Just curious what the policy is.

(I also appear to have done something wrong, as what I was quoting and my text appear as 2 different posts ???? )

There is no official policy. We let most forum topics live on in perpetuity. The only exceptions are: 1.) those where conversations have gotten out of hand but I didn't want to remove the "meat" of the thread; 2.) sold or expired items in the Marketplace (when I'm made aware of same); and 3.) they are in-house announcements that don't require additional discussion.

There's no default expiration date on any topic. If you find an old topic that you'd like to revive or continue to discuss, you can certainly post a reply there and bring it back to the top.

Back in the rpls.com hey days, I remember that a lot of people would start new threads about old topics but they would add "TTT" to the end of the topic title. I think that was mainly because that forum didn't bring topics with new replies back to the top... they would just keep scrolling down the screen, so people would just create a new topic with "TTT" to get it back onto the first page. This is purely from memory, so I could be wrong about the specifics. Regardless, there was a reason that users felt the need to create new topics based on old topics and bring them back into the fold, and it just worked.

You do have me wondering now though, if we should be expiring topics a specified amount of time after the last reply. So if a topic goes stale for, say, 30 days, it gets automatically locked. If someone wanted to bring up that topic again, they could simply grab the URL and then create a new topic and reference the old topic.

I'm going to let this one simmer a bit, as I'm intrigued about the idea. Not sold on it at this point, just intrigued. It might be a nice way to bring an old topic current without bringing all the baggage along with it, but the referenced URL would allow those interested to dig into it. On the other hand, having the historical aspect of a specific topic in a single thread has its merits as well.

Apparently you quoted, then clicked "Add Reply", then created an entirely new reply with your response (that's just a guess on my part). When quoting, you can just select the text you want to quote, click the quote button directly below the selected text, then just start typing your response.
