I've been keeping an eye on the current state of the RPLS Today server because we having been chewing through disk space rather quickly. As the site continues to grow, so does the space it consumes. This is a good problem to have, but we are in a bit of a bind now. Allow me to explain...

We pay for server space with a provider that has a very large datacenter in Dallas. When we made that purchase and moved to the new server not too long ago, there was the promise that we could easily upgrade to larger disk space when we needed it. However, that particular provider and that particular datacenter have become very popular -- so much so that they no longer have any space for us to expand into. Hmph!

So now I'm stuck in a spot where I need to move RPLS Today to a new server in a new datacenter. I'm hoping to make this happen soon, since disk space is getting tight. I expected that it would be an easy upgrade but that has now been complicated since our current location has no extra space to sell to us. Had I known this was going to happen, I would not have waited until the last minute to upgrade.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you all know what's up. I'm not exactly sure when we'll make the move, but I'm going to try to do it in the least disruptive way possible. In the meantime, I'm doing a little housecleaning to keep things running okay for now, but the move is inevitable and somewhat urgent. Moving a site like this isn't something I can just do in the background and then flip a switch. In this case, I literally have to stop all activity and not open it back up until the move is completed. So it could be down for a few hours once the process is started.

That's your shot across the bow....

Not that I know anything relevant, but I'm surprised a big data center can't just keep on adding disk space as needed.

@bill93

That was exactly my thinking, so imagine my dismay when I discovered that they had literally expended capacity.

Then, upon doing some Googling, I found out that the provider seems to be having this problem in a few of their datacenters. It's a bit worrisome.

Have you considered virtualizing the site with Amazon or one of the other big providers??ÿ I would think that would make the issue of expansion pretty trivial.

One more thing to worry about.?ÿ Just my luck.?ÿ You know I start getting withdrawal symptoms that are quite painful when I can't get my RPLS Today fix.?ÿ Last time it put me in the hospital for three days.

@jim-frame

Indeed, I've been giving that a lot of thought, actually.

And to add insult to injury, I've been dealing with shingles for over a week now. Seems I've crested the peak and am improving but it still sucks!

ALRIGHT WENDELL! The old cliche of "stress kills" needs an update to include stress-induced shingles.

A couple of decades ago I hadn't been feeling well.?ÿ I'd been diagnosed with gallstones nearly two years before that, but had been able to control things with a very low-fat diet.?ÿ Well, I ended up with shingles because my gall bladder was finally having major issues. Shingles is a nasty little disease that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Long story short, I healed up after a prescription of Valtrex and scheduled the surgery.?ÿ I haven't had a recurrence since, but the memory of that painful episode nudged me into getting the two-dose shingles vaccine last year.

So Wendell, if there is some stress in your life now is the time to jettison it.?ÿ You'll feel better mentally and it will reduce your chance of having another episode of shingles.?ÿ In the meantime, schedule an appointment with your doctor to see how long you should wait to get the first of your two shingles boosters (they are usually taken 6 months apart).

I hope it isn't because you've been worrying too much about your "upgrade dilemma." Get well quick, Wendell.

?ÿ

@gene-kooper

My mother got shingles on her face, which went into her eye, and then she was blind in that eye. Many years of pain, it never went away totally for her, probably lasted 15 years or so until she passed away. So of course I got the shots as soon as I turned 60.?ÿ

@nate-the-surveyor

Yes.

I flew to Chicago, demanded access to my servers in Chicago, then plugged in a USB drive to "my" RPLS Today server. I downloaded everything and then flew to San Francisco, where I did the same thing but uploaded the USB drive to the new server. All was accomplished late last night while you all were sleeping.?ÿ ?????ÿ

Seriously though, I essentially setup a virtual pipeline from old server to new server, added a temporary maintenance page to the website, then copied everything to the new server through the pipeline. Then I switched the DNS to the new server and tested things. It went much faster than anticipated and (crossing fingers) no problems at all. The new server is quite a bit further away from many of you now, but my options in Dallas were limited and I wasn't going to settle for anything that wasn't on the up and up.

The old server is still sitting there, and I'll keep it available and paying for it for about 30 days. I want to make sure nothing is lost in the move.
