Hi, I would like to introduce myself as a new member!
I'm originally from Puerto Rico. I move to the states back in 2000 after I finished school. Since then I have lived in Georgia, Florida, Alabama and the last five in Houston, TX.
I am licensed in Alabama and NM and have a bachelors degree in Land Surveying from University of Puerto Rico.
I currently work for AECOM as a survey project manager for oil and gas projects. We don't have a survey department so we subcontract all the survey work which is good and bad. Good because I have the opportunity to work with a lot of survey companies and surveyors from all over the country but at the same time it's a little lonely because I'm the sole surveyor in my office.
Anyhow I look forward to be part of the discussion and learn some too.

Based upon the recent news reports it seems like a good time to not be in Puerto Rico 🙁

University of PR? They have an excellent program; most successful surveying program for the US (no politics intended). I considered applying for a teaching position there. Glad to have you on board.

I'm sure there are many good things to be said about working for a large firm, but whenever the AECOM name comes up I'm reminded of the one job I did for them several years ago. My contract called for payment within 30 days, and when that didn't happen I followed up with my PM every month to request a status update. Sometime after 120 (or was it 180?) days he cc'd me on an email to his boss, which said simply "This is the reason we can never retain good consultants a second time."

We have half a dozen graduates from UPR in our survey department and I have another starting for at the end of the month. It's our "go to" spot to recruit candidates when we're looking for someone with long term advancement potential.

Welcome, I would say this board is so popular because a good majority of surveyors are either solo, work in small offices or work in big offices but are in fact alone in having no associates with which to discuss survey issues. Consider this "the big office water cooler in the cloud"
Please reconsider your avatar, the sun overwhelms your image plus it reminds me of some poor surveying experiences. Several times in my career I had traverse observations with the sun in the background. I could see the crosshairs move off the point as the sun differentially warmed up internal parts of the instrument.
