Bob from WA.?ÿ I got interested in surveying when I learned to read grade stakes as a heavy equipment op in the USAF, learned even more when I had to train others.?ÿ Now I'm just a hobby mapper, usually with a planetable & alidade.

Bob

Welcome Bob,

A hobby mapper! Interesting, lookin forward reading more about how you exactly are doing this. And that just for fun, most of us do this for a living, but I can confirm that we have lots of fun doing so.

greetz from Belgium

Welcome.?ÿ Most of the younger participants don't have a clue what a plane table or alidade happens to be, let alone understand how to put them to use productively.?ÿ Reading stadia makes no sense to them.?ÿ How about providing them with some of your experiences?

You have found a great resource.?ÿ Use it to your advantage and for plain old fun.

Hey!?ÿ Me too, kinda.?ÿ I got into surveying through being a gradesetter, and I got there through being a heavy equipment operator.?ÿ I was mediocre at moving dirt, but they figured out I can add on the fly, and use a ruler, so I got stuck with a gator and a lath bag.

I LOVE surveying, and recently passed the FS exam and am waiting for the LSIT cert from my state.?ÿ I describe us as professional hikers, that also do scavenger hunts and make maps.

One thing that helps tremendously is to not be allergic to anything.?ÿ That is more than half the job.?ÿ The other half is mainly having the guts to do what needs to be done, in the field or in the office.?ÿ Stand up, take ownership and challenge others to prove you wrong...................because you will be from time to time and we all learn from our mistakes.

A routine question at any medical office is "Are you allergic to anything?"?ÿ My standard answer is, "Only hard work.?ÿ It makes me break out in a sweat."
