Hello,
I work for the county road department as the Survey Technician, CST1 after retiring as a Golf Course Superintendent. I am working towards my PLS license and looking forward to the forums here.
Respectfully,
Troy Alderson, MBA, CST1

Welcome! ?????ÿ
What I want to know is how old does one have to be in order to retire from a cushy-sounding job like Golf Course Superintendent??ÿ Is this a public employer that is part of a retirement plan based on age plus years of employment adding to a specific number??ÿ Or is this a private course where they put you out to pasture when you need a golf cart to go from tee to green?
Welcome!
I love that drop down to Pendleton from the Blues esp when the fog has rolled up the Columbia!
Enjoy the didactic and dynamic environment this website offers.
cushy-sounding job like Golf Course Superintendent
I can imagine like most jobs that has its headaches, probably including dealing with underperforming employees, user complaints, environmental regulations, water shortages, and competing with other departments for budget.

There is nothing about being a Golf Course Superintendent that is cushy; low budgets, low wages, low labor pool, etc. Being a Golf Course Superintendent is a life style, much like being a rancher or farmer. There are no days off or vacations during the golf season. I was in the private industry during my time as a GCS, so no retirement but what I was able to put away. I am in my mid-50s and now have a job I can leave at work.
Forgive me for my ignorance.?ÿ I do not participate in pasture pool.?ÿ Closest I ever came was going to a driving range just to do something different.
I did attend a significant golf tournament one time many years ago.?ÿ Jay Haas was a young fellow at the time.?ÿ ?ÿWill admit I do watch a little golf on TV.?ÿ But, since it is mostly the clips of drives and putts it in no way resembles trying to follow the golfers through the course.
It must be wonderful working in Pendleton. Great Rodeo and Great Whiskey!
?ÿ
Good luck with your career change.

Thanks Adam,
Sometimes the whiskey is too great.

No problems @holy-cow.
What you see on TV and as a spectator is the hard work of the Superintendent and their green crew. Of the 11,000 golf courses in the USA, maybe 10% have it "good" and they still work long hours.
Knew an Agricultural Engineer many years ago whose chosen career was in designing golf course irrigation systems.?ÿ He had traveled all over the world for projects.
Welcome to the group! You should find it informative and entertaining! ????
Be sure to join PLSO, I??m sure they need more members from your area. I was a active member for decades. ???

As a PLS that may or may not be the case depending on where you work.?ÿ If you are working for the county, then you can likely keep "leaving your work at work" and not bring that home with you.
Good luck with your exams.?ÿ The studying doesn't stop when you pass your exams, it only just starts.?ÿ It's really a career with lifelong learning and improvement, which is part of why they require continuing education hours in most states.?ÿ There is always more to learn, and that keeps things interesting and fun in my opinion.

Yes join plso! Also note the blue mountain chapter has a workshop scheduled for next Saturday 11-19-22. Great speakers and great topics planned!
