I've just added a new item to our FAQ page:

Why is category selection so important?
When creating or replying to a post, it is critical that you select an appropriate category. This allows us to attract high quality users because we have purposely set the website to allow search engines to only index surveying-related posts. All other categories are only available to registered users (a perk of registration).

-----

I know we all forget to choose a category sometimes and we here on "the team" usually catch them. This is just a reminder. I also know that there will be a few who will tell me how it "should" be done, but for right now, I assure you that there is a very specific reason for the way it is.

Thanks! 🙂

While I understand why you are strict on the categories, the only reason I can come up with why others whine constantly whine about it is they can't function if they aren't griping about something.

Some cannot get it up, unless they are complaining..... makes sense to me!

Kind of up there with always seeking reasons why the contrary can be shown. Put 20 surveyors in a room and you'll have 27 contrary's to be shown.

...and we'll all be right... just ask us.....;-)

Could I suggest that you make the default a to say "Select Category" rather than the default "General Non-Surveying"? Then you could test whether they've actually selected a category before you allow the post. I'd think there are a lot of posts that just don't remember to select the category (even with the big red lettering "please").

At least it'd make sure we've made a conscientious attempt.

Hey, JB, that's probably a good idea....

Either before, or after, you HAVE to select a category.

How about we all just learn a bit more tollerance and take some personal responsiblity. Nobody forces anyone to read or respond.
Maybe growing up and acting like adults?

Totally agree. For me, the category thing is more about getting more exposure for surveying-related topics and less exposure for non-surveying-related topics.

Categories? Question For Wendell?

How about an official breakdown of which categories are available to the public?

Okay, making fun of someone stationg how it "should" be. But not really. That is a great idea! I imagine that would cut down on 95% of the mistakes. There will still be some that post a political message in humor or in surveying to be obnoxious...but it sure would help some of the honest guys remain honest. (of course I don't know how much work that is to change.)

Good point JBS

Mark, Sometimes Politics Is The Funniest Thing Going

A lot of times it has nothing to do with the political persuasions of the target of the comedy. In that light I have previously requested a "Politically Incorrect" category for such humor.

However that is my opinion and this is not my site.

Paul,
I disagree with even more categories. "Politically incorrect" is in the eyes of the beholder. If I slammed Christ and God many of the "politically incorrect" crowd would claim blasphemy. Not many of the Republicans appreciate Bill Mahr's humor any more than the Democrats appreciate Rush Limbaugh's commentaries. You want to push the envelope by calling it humor and having it make fun of the democratically elected president, and say hey I'm my own man, and am not "politically correct". Being a politically incorrect has been adopted by many hateful republicans who use it as an excuse for slamming their rivals, as democrats have done for years prior. Call it as you will, it is just a way to push your political agenda in other categories. Why not put it in Politics and Religion and be done with it?

I agree that often times politics is the funniest thing going on, but what's the problem with discussing it in the politics section? (I know I won't convince you, but that's the way I see it.)

Categories? Question For Wendell?

Not to speak for Wendell, but it's easy to do. Go to the upper-right of the page, and click 'logout' and use the pull-down to see what categories are then available while you're logged out. Maybe if you need them written down, you can try that and report your findings on a post.

Our software will not allow us to do this, though. But it is a GRAND idea!!! 😀
