Today i was working a project and i had radio miscommunications.
While the unit was constantly locking 11 or more satelites at times radio link was down which i find strange.
Granted the trimble r8s internal antenna is weak 0.5w but AFAIK you either get full or no reception.
How can you get fixed accuracy and then move over half a meter and get autonomous/DGPS accuracy due to no corrections coming via radio
I know the feeling! In the end I move the base station and that solves the problem. After the early days we made our own brackets to point both base and rover aerials upwards and clear of the receiver; the problem halved but we still get it from time to time - sometimes even when you can see the base from the receiver- other times we get 3k. without problems.
In the typical RTK radio (VHF/UHF) frequencies, line of sight is generally the standard expectation. Higher antennas, better antennas and shorter range are all helpful. It also could be that the frequency is being used by others. A lot less interference using 900 Mhz spread spectrum radios with arguably about same range using less power.
After 20+ years of RTK radio experience I got my Amateur (HAM) radio license and learned a lot of knowledge that would of been useful back in 1995 when I 1st started down the RTK road from the static world.
