Bad Battery leads to blowed transmission, leads to expensive purchase....

Went to work yesterday, about an hr away. Polaris 800 would not start. Low battery. Jumped it. It ran ok. 15 min later, shut it down. Now, it would not start. Probably a bad battery. Jumped it again. And, reved it for about a minute. Suddenly I heard a big bang. It managed to wander into gear, at high RPM. Tore up the transmission. No gears now. So, I now either need another ATV, or Fix this one. I'd like to move up to either an 850 Sportsman, or a Side by side. Like the ranger.

I drove a Yamaha Wolverine, side by side. It does NOT have a differential in the REAR, so it tears up the ground, and does not like to turn. It was my clients. It is also not real good to get in and out of. I did like the roof, and big bed.

I probably should get a Polaris Ranger. But, the market is not good now. Used ones, are commanding new prices.

Any suggestions? Stick to Sportsman, or Go Side by side? And, if so, which one?

Thanks.

Nate

Go ahead and go for it.

It is only money.

I overpaid for a 2016 GMC last year. ?ÿGlad I did. ?ÿGlad I have the right tool for the work.

The Honda Pioneer 500 is the best of both worlds.?ÿ It is narrow enough to fit in the back of a truck or get anywhere an ATV will go while still having the comfort and payload of a UTV.?ÿ Mine has gotten me to some pretty tough spots.

I've got both. Honda ATV 350. It pretty much goes anywhere you've got the guts to ride it. I put a winch on it because when it gets stuck "it's Stuck!". I also got a Polaris RZR. It's a welfare queen. Seems to always need something fixed or replaced. It's a tank! Had to cross a river the other day. Was met by thick willows on the other side. It bull dozed right through them. The landowner was riding with me. He was so impressed he bought one. It just depends on if you go solo or take someone with you. They are both"Must Haves". Both will fit in the back of a full size pickup. The RZR is 54" wide winch on it too. installed a mount fot the GPS on the roof. It's great for topoing.

My brother trains horse and has a few ready to go. I am sure with a good horse or mule your worries would be over. And with the rising fuel cost it makes for a great way to save on overhead. Also probably could put a sign on the back end and make a little extra money for fertilizing as you go. ?ÿJust a bit of humor. ?ÿ Though if i had a place to stall one i would ride one to the office every day. It would be like getting a raise. ?ÿ In gas savings. ?ÿ

I think I could go 300 yrs back, and be very happy. Horses used to be primary animals. Now they are recreational pets, that like hay. Lots of it.

Well, I got a used polaris 850. It appears to have taken a hard fall. Damage on right side. Power steering is fantastic. And 78 horse ??? power is possibly more than needed. So, I've got to work on it, to fix the damaged part. Mechanicly, it seems sound. Really, though, I thing a ranger might be better. But this will fit in my truck.?ÿ?ÿ

I drove to SW Dallas, and got it. Had a good trip. Stopped at buc-ee's. It's the world's largest gas station. Their barbeque brisket sandwiches are outstanding. They have 120 gas pumps. They were running hard. They run 3 shifts, of 40 people per shift. 7 days a week.

I think a native American (possibly Indian?) owns it. Their merchandise was top quality, and expensive. Lots of cool stuff. I bet they sell a million $ a day.

Back to that sportsman 850, power steering is essential, for an aging surveyor.?ÿ

Atv's are expensive. But, like a hammer, needed. I can't think of going back to manual methods.

As always, that javad is top shelf. But, their cogo needs to keep advancing.

Someday, in surveyor heaven, when the last pin has been pounded, and my last plat drafted, I want to leave "footprints", that genuinely help, and are NOT ambiguous.

Today, that means atv's, GPS, and clear and informative plats.

And, an occasional smoked herring can added to my rebar.?ÿ

Now, I have to buy a welder, and fabricate some stuff. To make that sportsman 850 pull surveyor gear, instead of being a bronco on the trails.

The world record for largest gas station is Buc-eeƒ??s in New Braunfels, Texas with 120 gas pumps, 1,000 parking spots and a 68,000 foot store.

I've never heard of a bad battery causing a transmission failure....if it's possible on that machine it's pretty bad design imo.?ÿ

I'd love to have a nice side by side I could use on some jobs plus plow my driveway instead of snowblowing it... But it would only be like 1% of my jobs I could use an ATV at.?ÿ

A nice thing about owning my own truck and it being 18 years old is that I can drive it through the woods, and rough fields and not worry as much. I keep a come a long and will eventually replace the front bumper with a heavy duty unit with a winch. I've never been stuck but I like having the right tools/backup plan. In the morning I could be driving through a couple acres of fields then a few hours later I'm in a cramped subdivision with no room for the trailer/ATV.?ÿ

On a somewhat related note... I've been talking nicely to my truck and encouraging the 360,000km engine and transmission that it has lots of time left on this earth (so far so good - fingers crossed). I just found out the other day the transmission is shot in the 2018 f150 one of our crews drives. 10 speed so it's going to be pricy if it's not under warranty.?ÿ

If the battery were hot, I would have worked as normal. The dead battery led to me revving the motor, which, because I failed to put it into park, allowed the shifter to creep, catch a gear, make a big bang sound, and did something to the gearbox, such that I cannot get it into any gears.

My experience is that whatever you buy, you might as well buy two of them because when it goes in for repairs (and it will, I promise) it takes 2-3 months getting it back.

@nate-the-surveyor?ÿ

typically, itƒ??s always cheaper to repair then replace, but with supply chain issues, you may have to weigh the time to get parts accordingly. If this is a single occurrence, suck it up and pay for the repair. Itƒ??s the cost of doing business. If this is just one instance of a plague of repair costs it may be time to look into getting new.?ÿ

I am probably outside of the norm, as folks clearly have a brand preference, but I chose to purchase from the brand with the best local support, rather than the brand I prefered.?ÿ

That being said, I would not buy a Polaris product, or one made by themƒ??.. I think they make certain John deer and kubota models. I know two people disfigured by fires from Polaris problems. Google it.?ÿ
