I'm looking to purchase some new equipment. Just one GPS Rover system that will be linked to a local RTK system. Not sure which brand to go with. I work for the county and I'm the field person and the drafter, so no need for any fancy cloud interfacing. Has anyone tried the Carlson GPS equipment? How about Geomax?
there are several new makes available. stonex might have something that suits you, if i am allowed to quote a name
I like Geomax. You have to consider what data collector and software you'll be using. I don't think Leica will work with 3rd party software....at least I have never seen it....
My first qu stion is have you ever done this?

As with most things your budget is going to be a big driver in your decision making process. My Dad always told me to buy the best (fill in the blank) I could afford and that advise has generally served me well. It also depends a lot on what you're going to be using it for. Are you doing true land surveying or more GIS data capture? My personal preference tends towards Leica but that's not to say other manufacturers aren't just as good. If you're using the equipment in more of a land surveying application with some boundary recon and topo I like this package Allen Precision has on sale:

It's pretty light weight and the newer Captivate controller software is pretty intuitive. Both the sensor and the controller have options to accept a SIM card or have internal CDMA modems for connecting to the network depending on what cell carrier you'll be using.
Keep in mind that for connecting to the network you'll have to have some sort of data plan and depending on where you're located there might be a subscription cost for the network itself.
Best of luck!
We just purchased 2 Carlson Rovers and have been very happy with them. I demoed a Geomax and had trouble getting my phone card to work with it. Worked fine using a hotspot but just seemed a bit temperamental for my liking.
Yep, nowadays pretty much pick your software, that will narrow down your choices the most. Then decide if you need close tech support, that will probably select the system for you.

Carlson SurvCE will run on both the system 1200 and Viva series, but the Extended GeoCOM license key is required to make it work.

I am well pleased with my purchase from igage.com

The second most important set of issues are compatibility with your current data collection system/office software, and your workflow.
I think the most important issue is the local rep you buy from. Somebody that knows their stuff, and can tell you how to use it effectively. All the units do the pretty much same thing. (The Javadites will cringe here.) Lots of them have the same OEM parts under the hood, no matter the shape or color of the plastic. But, the person you actually talk to can make a big difference.
That's my $0.02. Don't forget to pay the taxes. And, the resale value is pretty poor.
(And in spite of the Javadite joke, that might not be a bad answer for you, it is compact, self contained, and includes the data collector.)

I think the Carlson is made by Geomax.
Javad LS. Never stops surprising me everyday I use the thing. So far advanced from everyone else with the six engines, interference detection, and the new hybrid RTK. Down side is if you are running on an existing network the refresh rate will be at 1hz which it will work but to take advantage of this receiver it needs to be on 5hz. Beautiful things happen at 5hz!

Carlson GPS is made by Hemisphere, and their robots are Geomax/Leica.

A person in your situation should shop for local support and training, and get whatever that dealer is selling.

I'm assuming you need it for infrastructure GIS. So make sure the data collection software can handle attributes rather than only point and description. Maybe not an issue anymore but it used to be. I know the Javad LS mentioned can handle attributes, don't know about the others.

I have been well pleased with my dealer support from igage.com in Utah (I think?). I am in Indiana.
What system did you go with, Mr. Ott? And, what type of surveying is your main focus with it?

I cannot remember the exact model but it is somethig like x90+ maybe? I use it to connect to Indiana's INDOT CORS network (top notch network run by top notch people) via my internet data connection personal hotspot on my at&t iphone account. I use it to "bring section corners and benchmarks" to small sites for topo control. Then I bring out my robot for the site specific topo shots.
This works very well for me. I just made my last payment on the 10-24 plan.
Contact @Mark Silver at igage. He can tell you exactly what I have and will be very helpful to get you just what you will need.
Debbie,
I just can't resist anymore. You would be very well served to take a look at the Javad LS.
If you were to contact any of the following individuals listed here.. http://javad.com/jgnss/support/live-technical-support.html you will get lots of answers.
I happen to use one every day, and could not be more satisfied.
I have Spectra Precision Epoch 50 base/rover with Ranger 3 and Survey Pro. Very satisfied.
