perform any different from the GS16? The GS16 is touted as "self learning", so would the GS15 also be "self learning"? According to advertised specs both GNSS have the same technology.

I am trying to decide which one to purchase. Would appreciate hearing opinions from someone in the know.

Thanks,
ibenhavin

The new GS15 (with 555 channels) has the same performance as the GS16, they're both self learning. Don't confuse the new GS15 with older GS15's, because the older ones have previous generation GNSS boards inside. If you're looking for a network rover only and you'll use GSM datalink, i would go for the GS16 because it's much lighter and easier to carry around, also you could use it in a smartpole solution more comfortably. However, if you also plan to use it as a base station and also use UHF, i would go for the GS15.

Thanks Arturs,
One other thing...would you happen to know whether or not the CS15 running Smartworx (new GS15 advertised to work with either CS20 Captivate or the older Smartworx controllers running fw v6) would prevent "self learning" feature from working? A consideration is to control the 555 channel GS15 with my CS15 with firmware version 6, rather than having to purchase a new CS20. However, I do not want to defeat the new self learning feature.

There shouldn't be any receiver performance related downsides in using the CS15 with sw version 6, as all the improvements that come from the "self learning" are due to receiver not controller - different GNSS board, antenna element, algorithms etc. Also if i'm not mistaken then GS16 can only be connected to the Captivate controllers such as CS20, so in this case you're pretty much limited to only GS15 if you don't want to purchase a new controller. However, before you choose between these models, try them out for yourself to see which feels better in your hands and suits best to your surveying style, don't take my thoughts for granted, they may differ from yours 🙂 I personally would choose the GS16 only because of the weight and size, i know i'll be much happier carrying it all day long. The GS16 is also available with UHF as an option if you ever need to use it as a base, it's just that if you initially buy the receiver without the UHF, it's much easier to get it later for GS15 due to the "slot-in" modem system. But try them out for yourself if you have a chance, really!

The GS16 will work with the CS15 using the latest Viva v6.? according to the literature.

John, the Leica web page does not confirm it if you look at the GS16 and GS15 datasheets for example. Only CS20 and CS35 controllers are mentioned under GS16.

Right Arturs, that confirms what I was told by my Florida Leica dealer

Now i have to test this. I wouldn't trust the datasheets because those are generally written for the ROW and not NAFTA. Let me see if i can connect a GS16 to a CS15 with the latest firmware versions.

Found this in my support documents. Looks like the GS16-CS15 is not supported

GS16 can receive L5, the 15 can't. We just purchased a 16, kicks our R8's butt.

I just noticed looking at the new 2017 GeoMax price pages that the Zenith 35 Pro now offers 550 channels. I wonder if it's the same as the GS16 on the inside.

The GS10, 15, 16, 25 ALL currently show the following: Self-learning GNSS, 555 Channels and Signal tracking GPS (L1, L2, L2C, L5), Glonass (L1, L2), BeiDou (B1, B2, B32), Galileo (E1, E5a, E5b, Alt-BOC, E62), QZSS3, SBAS (WAAS, EGNOS, MSAS, GAGAN), L-band.

It looks to me if the datasheets are correct, all of these receivers have the same GNSS engines, difference is in form factor, data links, batteries, weight, etc. As far as performance, they are all the same near as I can tell.

Sounds like our salesman may haveis informed us, or maybe it was that the GS16 only works with Captivate. Regardless, it is a nice unit.

I'm kind of in bind at this point. I just had replaced one of our ATX1230 systems through and insurance claim. It turns out that while they seem to be okay will the rod falling over, they don't fair so well when coming of the truck at 25mph while do LiDAR verification. I ended up getting a GS16/CS20 setup. The real problem now is that I opted to get another GS16, taking advantage of a trade in, to go along with our CS15 after missing the fine print on the latest Viva release notes. For some reason the CS15 will run with any of the new GS units running 6.0+. Any but the damn GS16 it turns out. Now I need to decide if I get another CS20 or try the CS35 and sell the CS15.
As for difference between the GS15 & the GS16, I think they changed the GS15 boards without changing the product number.
