What's it worth?

It's worth whatever you want to pay for it or whatever you can sell it for...

seriously...

I've seen the old instruments at auction go anywhere from -0- (no opening bid) to $100's (rookie "pickers", wanna-be's, lol).

Someone recently tried to sell me an "antique collectible sextant" for $1000. When he sent me the pics, it turned out to be a worn out, used/abused, Gurley transit...

I offered him $25... he was upset with my offer, seems he paid $400... this gun was absolutely junk....good for a few parts at best....

Post pics if you have some!

Thanks, David

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you...

What's it worth?

Reminds me af a lady who called to find out what her husbands "Transit" was worth. It was the common Bostrom Farm Level. I told her it was worth very little and I had simply no use for it. Perhaps a tiny step better than a hand level for insuring gravity irrigation flow.

Jered,
Yes, I saw that site. This is an instrument that has been donated to the scholarship auction for this year. Along with another old brass dumpy level, a brass transit, a gunter's chain and a few other items. Just trying to see where to start the bidding.

What's it worth?

I just checked in since my earlier post... I didn't mean for my response to sound harsh...:-)

I should have added, surveying instruments collectors are a niche market. There are VERY FEW collectors outside the surveying community. And most surveyors tend to apply a "sentimental" factor when selling and/or purchasing these old instruments, which falsely inflates the value, when in fact, most are worthless.

Like I stated earlier, it's worth what someone will pay for it. If you're selling them, start high... you can always negotiate down in price, but it's difficult to negotiate up... 😉

Would like to see pics though....

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you...
