I also have a South instrument that my grandfather decided to buy from Canada. I was told by a dealer that they perfected the 2 year disposable instrument and they are not worth the plastic that holds them together. In other words, good luck.

I also have a South instrument. We have had no problems. South makes the lower end instruments for Topcon and Sokkia, and the total station I have is the same as the Topcon, with a different badge. I would love to have a complete Trimble setup, but cannot justify the extra cost.
I look at it this way, a BMW or or Mercedes is a top of the line vehicle and I would love to have one, but the Ford Taurus can get me there in the same manner, just not as fashionable.

about 1 dollar. Sounds about right for something made in China.

That's why I go out of my way to check labels before buying anything. 🙂

LOOK GUYS WHEN I PURCHASED THE INSTRUMENT I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS MADE IN CHINA I WAS JUST LOOKING FOR AN AFFORDABLE INSTRUMENT TO GET THE JOB DONE, IT HAS DONE THAT FOR ME. IT IS NOT A BAD INSTRUMENT FOR SOMEONE WHO IS JUST STARTING OUT AND NEEDS SOMETHING UNTIL THEY GET ENOUGH MONEY TO PURCHASE SOMETHING MORE EXPENSIVE. OR MAYBE ALL OF YOU MAKE PLENTY OF MONEY.

I'd rather have a South Instrument than a Topcon any day of the week!
