I'm looking to buy a GPS Base setup to use for static data-logging. Been looking at Trimble 4700's on eBay; they seem to be plentiful. Any advice?
Dave
There is a base & rover special going on here for the US dollar equivalent of about $16 000.00
They are chinese receivers with a spectra ranger and carlson surv CE.
Thats about half the price of most other base rover kits here.
I know the guy selling them, he rekons they are good value.
I dont use them.
I would check out Javad, they have a base for $1900

Thanks Pdop and Scott. Those are definitely an option.

Spectra Precision (Trimble) Epoch 25 base can sometimes be had on Ebay for $500.
Trimble 5700 base/rover can be had on Ebay for $1000 - $1500 or so.
Both are 24 channel GPS L1/L2 only. They'll both output RTCM up to 3.0. Both work well with GPS Configurator, WINPAN and Trimble Configuration Toolbox. The 5700 works well with Survey Controller on a TSCe. Neither one does GNSS.
😉 :good:
I'll second the X-90

XP90 Base Bang For The Buck
Ditto on the XP 90. It's not just the unit, although that is great.... its the software that makes it so easy to send files to OPUS or OPUS RS...a great package for static points! and, customer service has been fantastic.
I bought a used Topcon Legacy E for a base to use for OPUS. I think it cost me around $2000. It works great.
The X90 that others have mentioned was very tempting; but, I wanted to be able to add a rover later for RTK.
For static, I would say that Javads new base is the way to go. Multi constellation, and a huge memory, with long battery life. You can blue-tooth them to a base radio in the future. They are super small too, will fit in your shirt pocket. Only downside I see with them is the non-standard thread on the bottom, but they do come with an adapter.

I second this as a general recommendation, but I have to note that for those willing to gamble, some of the legacy gear is getting silly cheap. I just bought another Trimble 4000SSi, with case and antenna cable, for less than $150 delivered. I don't have it in my hands yet -- so I don't know for sure if it works, though I'm betting that it does -- but for that kind of money I can afford to leave it unattended and not be out enough to bother the budget if it's gone when I return. I have to add an antenna and battery, but I have plenty of those already.
I have been using the Javad T-2 for about 4 months now. I love it. They have an android and iphone app to upload to opus. They are currently working on an upgrade to the app to be able to upload to opus projects as well.
If you have any specific questions or would like any more information on it send me an email. The email in my profile is good.

Interesting that it is the same unit that pdop1.0 has shown in his post above.
It is hard to walk away from a $1800 deal like that for static work.
I guess these new Chinese units will do major depreciation damage to the used GPS market.

A bunch of those recently sold on Ebay with only internal lithium batteries needing to be replaced. Quite a deal.
Jim,
That's one of my thoughts, not worrying about a super-expensive piece of gear getting stolen or hit. Just one reason in favor of the 4700.
Dave
AD,
I like the 5700, but the antenna for the 4700 comes with a nice ground plane "sombrero". Is the Zephyr antenna comparible, as far as eliminating multi-path?
Dave
Loyal,
I like! Shiny and pretty and my favorite -- Summer Sale!

Thanks Everyone For Your Input!
Thanks, all! I think I'll go with the X-90.
Dave
I think that you could add a rover to the X90 system from their website.
It looks like South African Rand bucks buy you more than US Dollar bucks if one is really looking for the bang as they say.
We just picked up an early model Legacy on the cheap. I really need to unlock the CF card though...
