I spoke to someone at the Ohio board today. I think I understand what she said. I would like to apply for a Ohio license by reciprocity. I have a BS in Civil Engineering, but with no surveying credits. She had said I need 16 surveying credits in order to sit for the Ohio exam. That is not exactly what I wanted to hear, but I guess it sounds reasonable. Where I live, the closest school that I know of that offers surveying classes is over an hour drive away which is not really feasible. Do any of you know where I can get the coursework online that will satisfy Ohio's requirement? I have been researching but not having much luck.

Check with Jerry Taylor at ETSU. Their Surveying and Mapping program is ABET accredited and offers online classes. The University of Florida also offers an online certificate in Geomatics. Either of those would satisfy their requirement.

All of the classes must meet certain subject requirements. Two of the classes are specifically based on Ohio procedure and theory. Makes it tough to get licensed by reciprocity.

Cincinnati State Technical and Community College has a 3rd year, after an A.A.S. which is entirely online. It prepares you for a 4th year at Northern Kentucky...and the ability to get your P.S. in Ohio. I believe CSTCC has well over 16 hours available online.

You might also check with University of Akron they have a B.S. in surveying but I'm not sure how many credit hours online.

Cincinnati State

I was on their site last night and could not find online courses. After reading Elias's reply I went back this morning. The information is there but hard to find. Cincinnati State has a surveying certificate program that is all evening classes. They also have an advanced surveying certificate program for BS CE graduates that is online, consisting of 6 surveying courses and 4 other courses. This link takes you to the curriculum listing:

Cincinnati State

Thanks guys. That is exactly what I was looking for. Now all I have to do is figure out how to fit it in between two jobs, a soon to be new wife, and three kids.
