Interactive Topo- too cool

My kids and I played in one a few weeks ago at a science fair. I won as I spent more time playing with it than any other kid. There were no other adults... it was better than the green screen, potato clocks and other exhibits.

I built the box this past weekend and started the mount for the projector and kinect camera. Easter got in the way of finishing it. I think I will use some plastic boxes to transport the ~200 lbs of sand and put some castors on it for easier transportation. I was told that fine sand is a better screen than coarse sand, but I plan to try a variety of options including smooth white stones.

The software is free. They have some design spec and recommended parts. I used 2x12's for the box with a 1/2" plywood base. I think I will put some castors on the back to transport and use totes for the sand. Might have to get a small vacuum so I do not make a mess during transportation. I can only imagine that the novelty will wear off too soon for my efforts, but that is life, right?

Our Civil students and computer students are going to build one. We are trying to come up with a good design for the projector and kinematics. Do you have a picture of your layout that we could look at?

Thanks,
Thad (with one d) 😀
