Nuthin'. But if you still have the same level of skill in 20 years, then the experience won't have counted for much. That was the point of the OP. For example, learning to stake grade quickly in your first two years would be great. But if that's all you ever do for the next 20 years, then you'll be pretty limited.
Amen to that, the day I quit learning is the day I'm 6' under.?ÿ I'll take any mentoring I can get too, it's dang hard to find quality mentors that aren't button pushers 🙁
Excited for the future of Surveying and Geospatial professions!

That is the day the greatest adventure begins.

The guys with 20 years experience are few and far between; but you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a party chief with 2 years of experience 10 times.?ÿ
Guys with 10 years experience are usually PLS's.
Maybe in your neck of the woods.?ÿ?ÿ I see a lot of guys with over 10 years on the job, with no intention of ever getting a license.?ÿ I always hear things like, "They don't pay enough for me to take on that kind of responsibility"

I see this a lot as well, but that is because of a union workforce and a booming economy.?ÿ I see a several companies with long term party chiefs that are competent and capable and will not deride them because they enjoy that aspect of the profession.?ÿ?ÿ
I've worked 5 years for two Party Chief's that had 40+ years surveying but were never licensed.?ÿ I learned more from them than just about any PLS I've worked under.?ÿ These guys are where you learn the "art" of surveying. A degree will only teach you the science the science.
As an LS, I've always done at least a site visit to any work that would have my stamp.?ÿ But that's easy now that my site is where my office is.?ÿ

Well Said! Consider that quote stolen.
I have been the crew chief for 30 years now. I never took any college classes therefore in RI I can't take the exam. For the last 15 years i have been working part time. (I'm A Fire fighter with?ÿ a rotating schedule.) I work for a small local firm that mostly does work in 3-4 towns. I just do residential surveys with a total station. (no GPS). I still love going to work. It is my hobby. We do 60% of my work in one town and is still fun unraveling some of the mysteries I find in the research. They say if you enjoy your job you never will have to work a day in you your life and I couldn't agree more.
Everyday in the field is better than any day in the office.
