As a matter of fact... ???? ????ÿ
Don't you, don't youuuuuuuuuu....
By the looks of the foliage and that appears to be a nice sized whitetail, it might be near Saratoga, but not at the track.
How do they know to cross at the signs??ÿ Can they read?
Makes you wonder, huh! They definitely aren't dumb animals!! ???? ????
This is a classic and worth a couple of minutes.
The follow up story.
Some think it was a prank or a stunt set up by the radio station. Interesting that the germ of the idea goes back a long way:
How do they get the deer to cross at that yellow road sign?
While driving through Colorado near Denver, we have seen the high fencing that drives such critters to their very own underpass.?ÿ That made me wonder about those who gain access to the highway strip between the two fences such that they are trapped in the traffic zone, much like turtles tumbling between railroad rails while crossing at a standard traffic crossing.?ÿ They are doomed.?ÿ Should we require railroad companies to install little turtle fences at traffic crossings?
The newest section of highway leading out of town here has high fences along the wooded area by the river.?ÿ They have in several places one-way traps so any stray deer in the ROW can get back to the woods. I can't get a picture to paste in tonight.?ÿ The deer gate has curved sections of wire in a funnel shape so that they are unlikely to find their way through in the wrong direction.

NYSDOT installed turtle crossing pipes on the NY Thruway somewhere between Syracuse and Buffalo, I think, it goes through an area where they probably wouldn't be able to place it today. I may have posted this in the past, but:
I attended a seminar on culverts, the presenter was a PE from TX, he showed a picture of a toad and said "This is the Houston Toad, an endangered species that are getting runover on the highways, so TXDOT(?) installed pipes for them to use. First problem was "how do you teach the toads to use the pipe?", second problem, Toads hop, they didn't size the pipe to accommodate this, so the poor toads were smacking their heads on the roof of the pipe, third problem, it didn't take the rattlesnakes long to figure out that if they stayed by the pipe, a nice tasty toad will eventually come out." He also had a lot of interesting pics of culvert failures and what could have been done to prevent them.
At least he's crossing at the right place. I was at a community meeting where a lady actually suggested at the Q & A that the deer aren't always crossing where the sign was and what could we do about it?
A state highway I was doing row work on actually had easements for snake crossings under the road.

Montezuma wildlife refuge, I saw those crossings a few weeks ago
Yes I believe you are correct, nothing but good old upstate NY swamp on both sides of the road.
By the way, have the tolls paid for that road yet? ????ÿ

I agree with you, the only dumb (aka:stupid) animals I've ever run across are called "Humans". ?????ÿ
By the way, have the tolls paid for that road yet?
I suspect you already know the answer to that, but no. By law it was suppose to go toll free a number of years ago but our greedy Legislators/Governor scraped that. Recently they removed all toll booths and have installed ezpass cameras/transducers.
I was being facetious, yes, I grew up in the Mid Hudson Valley, so I know quite a bit about the greedy politicians and their "games". The tolls on the Hudson crossings were supposed to pay for them and then and once the original bill was paid off, they then decided that they need tolls to pay for the maintenance of those bridges, well last July when I crossed the Mid Hudson Bridge (that's what it was while I was growing up, not the FDR Bridge) it in just as bad shape as when I left NY in 2002, same goes for US44 through my hometown, it hasn't changed since LOOOOONG before I left.
