Once in awhile I get a box of misc. stuff at farm auctions. Among some of the boxes were these screw cockeyes. What were they used for? Horse harness?
According to the following link, yes, screw cockeyes were used as part of the harness (and we certainly know that everything on the internet is the absolute truth)
Not sure what a cockeye is, but I'd use that in a heartbeat to help stretch fence.
I'd use it to attach my main sheet to the traveler...

Haha,....it took me a minute to get it.
It appears they can still be obtained new in various forms, as shown by this listing, and this one,
Rolling pins for very small pie crusts.
Never would have thought of calling a buckle mechanism a cockeye... much less a screwed one. I wonder what ones that haven't been "JAPANNED" look like?
Japanning is that heavy black paint like coating. Formerly frequently applied to tools and fittings, not so much these days.
I'd use it because apparently every Harness needs one.
