Watch this video - it's amazing. I had never heard of this instrument prior to today.
Midsomer Murders on PBS. It's the the instrument playing the theme song. There was a PBS segment not too long ago about the Theremin on History Detective.
I'm glad I don't live in Midsomer. Too many murders for what appears to be a small town! :-O
I think it also did the original star trek theme song.
If you've watched TV or a movie you've heard a theremin way more than you realize.
A museum I have volunteered at has a number of events throughout the year. At a couple of the events, there is invariably one or two Theremins available to be played and played with by whomever wishes to do so.
Kinda neat to see it done in person and watch kids have fun with them. I think they have even had Theremin kits which can be built. Not as nice as the ones in the video, but still works....
theremin is the stuff all the creepy movies are made of.
if there are any Fishbone fans out there, Angelo Moore took up theremin a couple years back. hard to believe theremin now has a place in funk/soul/punk
don't forget Pamelia Kurstin either
Yes, I've heard of it (and heard it) -- Paul McCartney was monkeying around with it back in the day.
That's pretty cool with "Over The Rainbow".
The instrument has changed a bit since 1966 when the Beach Boys used one in
Good Vibrations.
Indeed, Mr. Bill is correct.
Dr. Cooper [The Big Bang Theory TV show], during a pout gets his theremin out one evening and played the theme from Star Trek (original series of course).
Current day blues master Joe Bonnamassa also uses one during his concert at the Royal Albert Music Hall.
Yes, you can get kits to build your own. They really aren't that much either.
E
Dave -
TU for bringing it up.
I've only seen videos such as your reference.
You may wish to 'ave a peek at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theremin
Cheers,
Derek
PS-
No, Alexandra isn't getting me one for Christmas ...... yet
sounds like some kind of insulated underwear, i e "longhandles"
Zappa & Edgar Varese
I'n the sixties, Mothers of Invention used one at times. Zappa was a severe Edgar Varese devotee. Varese usedth way back for his compositions.
I liked Mothers concerts back then Always entertaining
darnit; I need to geek-check myself sometimes
Regularly, I'd say:-P
Don
See: Jimmy Page
When I was 11 or 12, I accumulated some of the parts for this project but never got around to building it.
There was a solid-state version in 1967.
Bonzo Dog Band had some mean theremin licks here and there too.
Want one??

I seem to recall a couple of episode where they've made jokes about that in the script.
Tyler
Watch the Simpson's episode "The Ziff Who Came to Dinner". 🙂
There's a pretty good theremin joke therein (couldn't help that one).

I always felt the same way about Cabot Cove.
Have a friend who built one...
