My daughter would turn to jello with a sideways glance. My boys sometimes required a little pop on the butt to focus their attention on the stern talking to that followed. They were often sent to their rooms, to "see if they could find their manners there". But we never administered any serious "corporal punishment".

Like a lot of things in surveying... it depends.

It depends on the child's offense, their disposition, and probably other factors as well. For myself, the mere warning of receiving the Board of Education was usually sufficient- though there were exceptions 🙂

I think it did me much greater long-term good than any harm.

There is a special place in hell for adults that hit children.

It is not necessary.

You are bringing up a child, not conducting a reign of terror.

No! was whipped by my mother on many occasions, had to cut my own switch off of a tree sometimes. Many times she was wrong on who did what, but that didnƒ??t matter...

They will be needed in hell to discipline the ones who should have been spanked. Some kids do need spanked, but never in anger.

My Father spanked me a few times, he was a large man (I am too). I don't really blame him, it was a fairly typical method used by his generation. It mostly caused extreme stress in me.

I absolutely refuse to hit a child, there are better ways, use your imagination, we aren't living in the Middle Ages anymore.

Discipline the child without hitting them, not difficult.

One of the excuses I often hear is, "you can't reason with a child." That is pure baloney, I do it all the time. Sure it takes patience but eventually the message gets across.

If only the rest of the world were so enlightened. Only thing worse than shanking a child is indifference.

Oh yeah, lots of whippin's and I deserved most every one and those that I didn't......well.......there was reasonable suspicion that I deserved it and I had to get my own arse whipping switches many times.

I got the snot and tar wailed out of me when I was a boy. And by that I mean it showed for a number of days after I received a "whoopin".

As a young adult I realized there was a vast spectrum between what people considered correction and abuse. I also realized I probably had a poor perspective on the subject. In that I promised myself I would never raise a hand to any child of mine, particularly in anger. I'm proud to say I pretty much pulled it off. I can't say I raised my boys without wanting to 'smack' them a couple of times, but I refrained.

It is a good feeling to see them with their children continuing the restraint and understanding I gave them when they were being raised. Mission accomplished.

This is excellent! I commend you. Now I have yet another reason to like you. I was just wondering what the stats were on people that were spanked, spanking their kids and people that weren't spanked, not spanking their kids.

No. I would equate it to be the same as hitting your wife. They are both human beings and I don't hit either.

I was spanked on a few occasions. It certainly did not make me believe that hitting others was the way to get what I wanted. Equating hitting ones wife with a spanking is a huge stretch.

I have not had a need to spank my three year old daughter and hopefully never will, but it is not off the table.

Why are they not both people? The word hit has just been replaced with spank to normalise it. What level of hitting is acceptable?

I grew up dirt poor in a rough area in Maine. I witnessed what real hitting was at a friend's house when his drunk dad beat him for spilling his dad's drink. I never equated the rare spankings I received with hitting or beating.

Dad worked his butt off logging and after Mom left us he didn't have the luxury of time and the reinforcement of another parent to keep me on a good path. Different life situations factor in to the equation.
