I was driving to a job this morning and saw, what I think is, the ugliest car I have ever seen.?ÿ I was an Edsel.?ÿ Now some Edsels were uglier than others and this was the worst.?ÿ It was a two tone, Pepto Bismol pink underneath with Khaki on top.?ÿ I know AMC made some ugly cars in the '70s but his thing took the cake.
Andy
Neighbor in the early 1960's had a 1958 Chevrolet that was a combination of Pepto Bismol pink and grey.?ÿ Yuck!?ÿ That's when Detroit built tanks for everyday use.
@holy-cow That was known as salmon-and-grey-and-white, when cars actually came in three colors.
Now you can get white or black or silver or bluish-grey (greyish-blue?) and a couple of different reds and maybe a blue or green.
And the interior will be grey (really dark grey: black) or tan.
They were coral. Not pink or salmon.
Popular in the 50s. I believe because this was when Miami Beach as the primary Winter get away was happening.
Regular flights became frequent and affordable for cold weather escapes from the NE. Men played golf. Women got some sun. Eastern Airlines was the prominent air carrier.
Knew someone that has a 56 Desoto in coral/grey. He went and played golf in the winter to Fl..It was a nice 50s car.
Must have been popular down there.
The Edsel is the benchmark for auto failure in design.?ÿ
We use to laughingly call them the cars with toilet seats in the grills.?ÿI never cared for them but all that I've seen are loaded with all the bells and whistles.?ÿ I always imagined Edsel was trying to make social amends for his father's sparsely equipped model Ts.?ÿ
56 DeSoto?ÿ
?ÿ
About 1960 our substitute mailman drove an Edsel delivering mail.?ÿ He was a prominent young farmer.?ÿ He was single and liked to be flashy.?ÿ His other car was a big ol' Harley with a windshield.?ÿ Had the loudest pipes I had ever heard.?ÿ Of course, I hadn't heard many so that might not mean much.
Pacer
Gremlin
VW Thing
And those horrible abominations that came out after the oil embargo where they butchered cars. What they did to the Mustang was criminal.
Pontiac Aztek
Cadillac Cimaron

One of the early references I remember is that they looked like and Oldsmobile sucking a lemon.
I always imagined Edsel was trying to make social amends for his father's sparsely equipped model Ts.
Edsel Ford died in '43, well before the car named after him was conceived. He had nothing to do with its creation.?ÿ
there were 15 years of some fugly cars and pickups created from the 70-90's.
Is anyone pining for an 84 Mustang or Camaro.
The dodge pickup then wasn't like a 49 Power Wagon.
Plus they all sucked when you pressed on the gas petal.

I was going to call you on that; then I did a search, and you were right:
That car is ugly, compared to a decade before, IMHO
Actually, that one I like 🙂
I'm thinking more 1978-1993, mostly cause I had a 93 sunbird, 78 nova, but my 79 Bronco was outstanding. As was my 86 4-Runner.
Actually, that one I like
Best of all the 1980 models! Actually would look a lot better with the top down.
The 80's were good for ORV's
Have an old Pontiac Sunbird of about that vintage out behind a barn yet. Died about a dozen years ago. Can't get the hood open. Afraid to see what it looks like in there. I bought it when it was still fairly new at a farm auction for a WWI vet that was about to finally move into an elderly care home with his wife. He was about 99 at the time and lived to see his 100th birthday. He had purchased it new. I told his son, who is 22 years older than me, that he might see it go whizzing down the road at 80 mph for the first time ever. He told me it definitely wouldn't be the first time. Dear Old Dad had a lead foot. Yikes!
The Pacer was truly a unique design and I can't help but wonder if they had received the GM rotary that the car was designed for, if our perception would have been a little different. Nah, to friggin ugly. They did make a woody though, like that is a good thing
Fish bowl. Who wants to be seen driving around in a fish bowl?
a friend had a Pacer. He had an engine fire, hood wouldn't open. It opened on the windshield end. Pried it open, bent hood and broke the windshield. He said he went to get parts at the junkyard and every Pacer he found had the same bent hood and broken windshield, must've been a common problem.
These were everywhere, had to be my least favorite car of all time.?ÿ
They were ugly on the outside and on the inside.?ÿ
As I'm above average it was close to impossible to sit in the passenger seat and forget the back.?ÿ
But they were popular, they seemed to be everywhere, now they are making a comeback as restomods, go figure.?ÿ
