I am going to be attending a meeting in Portland, Oregon October 11-15, 2010. I will have a little free time while I am there. What are the must see things in Portland? Also can anyone recommend a really good restaurant? 🙂
mcmenamins... I loved them coming from Oklahoma.
Great places to eat and with a really great atmosphere. Tillamook cheese is something that I picked up on out there and still order it over the internet some months later.
> mcmenamins
Ditto that. They are scattered all over Oregon. I'm not a beer drinking but I do like their fabulous home brewed root beer!

If you can get away from Portland and want a nice drive to the beautiful Oregon coast, the Tillamook Cheese Factory is where all the magic happens. They have a nice tour, a great ice cream shop and, of course, a store with fresh cheese.
Steve - If you are in to aviation the Evergreen Museum in McMinnville has the "Spruce Goose". McMinnville is about an hour SW of Portland.
Also, the Willamette Stone Park off Skyline Road in Portland is worth seeing, at least for a Surveyor. Portland also has a great zoo and the Japanese Gardens are very peaceful.
Scott
Ditto on the Spruce Goose. I recently met a field crew out there for a project I am working on. In this first picture, you can see the museum containing the Goose off to the right.
And this is the water park currently under construction. That is a real, full-size 747 mounted on the roof.
Steve,
The Columbia River gorge is a must see. Drive East to Cascade Locks and get out on the small island and you have the mighty Columbia River coming right at you. Then come back along the old highway for many many waterfalls. The return along the old highway to Troutdale and the Mcmenimans there.
Joe
That settles it, I am flying out early on Monday, and going through the hassle of a rental car, and will return late Friday. I see several things mentioned here that I want to see.
Do they not have Tillamook available at the stores there in Lawton? It's pretty easy to get here in Texas in fact I think we get ours from Sams. I know some of the other stores carry it as well.
Steve,
If you are interested in Unicorn Tattoos, give me a holler. I can let you know the best places to see them;-)
Cheers,
Dugger
Let me know if you'd like to meet up for a meal or just coffee. I'm a 30-minute drive away from McMinnville and about 1.25 hours to Portland.

Dang, Steve...I'd take Doug up on this invite...see if the West Coast Unicorns have red eyes...
DDSM
PS...have a Prime Time on your trip...

There's SO much to see and do here, you need to stay a month or so! 🙂
Wendell and I would enjoy meeting up with you (if you'd like) and having supper. We can take you to the biggest bookstore in the USA (takes up an entire city block!); we can take you to some awesome gelato; to a delicious "Happy Hour" on the 30th floor of the US Bank building; to the craziest and tastiest doughnut shop around, etc...and all this is in downtown Portland.
Tillamook cheese factory is a MUST see. Just for the samples! YUM!!!
You can drink the tap water here. It's clean and some of the best water in the world!
NO Sales Tax here. The price you see is the price you pay. So if you wanted to buy a big purchase like say a laptop or an instrument, get it here.
NO pumping your own gasoline. When ya pull in to gas up the rental car they will come and do it for you. It is state law.
October can get nippy up in Portland; bring something warm. 🙂
YAY Steve's coming to Oregon!! :hi5: :music:  :star:
see if the West Coast Unicorns have red eyes...
Oh yea, they're red alright, so red they are almost pink:-$
Cheers,
Radar
That gas pumping got me this spring in Portland Noodles. Almost had to fight the guy for the nozzle, I am so used to doing it myself. Being a pilot, I do not like anybody but me dispensing fuel into my tanks.
BTW, I am going to be in OR in late October, for three day float/camping trip on the Deschutes for Steelhead flyfishing, and a few days fishing the Klikatat in WA again for Steel.
"let me know when you are on the Klikatat in WA again for Steel.
I'll see what I can do to break away, from all the day to day......
Cheers,
Dugger
October fishing the Klikatat
Doug,
We are going to fish October 23 and 24 on the Klik. Driving the night of the 24th to Madaras, OR, and doing four day float trip on the Deschutes coming out at Maupin.
Have room for you to fish with us on the Kikatat, email me if you want in.
