It looks like it could be the Perfect Solar Storm

“I think the issue is now that modern society is so dependant on electronics, mobile phones and satellites, much more so than the last time this occurred,”

Back up that data!

Senior space agency scientists believe the Earth will be hit with unprecedented levels of magnetic energy from solar flares after the Sun wakes “from a deep slumber” sometime around 2013, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.

Well the Mayan calender is set to "run out" at the end of 2012 so this only makes sense.
Let the worldwide "freak out" begin, we have not had a good "freak out" since Y2K.

Don't get rid of your theodolites, they don’t care about no stinking solar flare!

True, but who will remember how to use them by then? Besides, to use a theodolite and chain takes 2-3 people instead of the one man crews these days.....;-)

The Mayan Calendar runs out in 2012 because

they ran out of room on the rock. Couldn't pick up a bigger rock, so they started carving on the biggest one they could pick up.

Nobody wanted a hernia in the stone age ... they used sharp rocks for knives, and anethesia consisted of a bonk in the head with a medium-sized rock!

Mayans were smarter than many people give them credit.

Should have seen me showing my crew how to chain and use the old gun when we were laying out this large house (not something we do much of anymore). Just getting them to use the plumb bob and get it over the point was paaaainful. I think I could remember everything but those GPS units are sooo much easier.

Oh well it's all going to be over by next year. Actually there's some new Millerite sect that has May something this year as the exact day. 😉

No, one man can chain, he just needs to set good anchors for the chain as he goes, also a bunch of walking to just do the chaining with many trips back to the gun so you can stay on line. I am probably not the only one to set monuments with a T-2 and a 300' steel chain. Always thought those leather lanyards were there to tie off to an anchor as well as dragging the chain along. The wrong end is out when doing this, but it works fine by placing the add at the point measured from.

Just out of curiosity, wouldn't the decrease in production (of having to walk back and forth giving yourself line) and such warrant the pay of a second person for the gun?

The Mayan Calendar runs out in 2012 because

Yeah, I'm not all that concerned, but in the back of my mind......

Sure it would if you needed another man all the time. That one man thing was not the routine way, but occasionally if it needed to be done the men worth keeping around could do it and get it done properly without supervision or complaint.

This is pretty old news.

The flares actually peak every 11 years, as the sun's overall magnetic field flips every 11 years.

There is no way of predicting when a large flare would hit the Earth. The last time was back in the 1800's. Back then, all it did was cause auroras that could be seen over more than half the Earth.

These days, it could cause a lot more disruption. But nobody really knows how much. And it's a bit like an earthquake - they can't predict when it will happen, just that at some point in the future, the Earth will be hit again by a large flare.

not much, if anything, you'll be able to about it any ways.....

Just make sure you've got your credit maxed out and all your money spent before 12/21/2012. 😀

Party like it's the end of the world!

Cheers,
Radar

My theory is that the calender guy said..."2000 years? That's bull**it! I'll do 1000 years and not a day more."

Good excuse for a party though 😀
