While fooling around with the Solano County (CA) aerial imagery that I just got working in QGIS, I noticed this odd-looking structure sitting on a pad a ways off the flight line at Travis AFB.?ÿ It looks like a shade-tree mechanic's attempt to build a jet airplane.?ÿ It's about 80 feet long and appears to be made largely out of steel.?ÿ Any thoughts on what its purpose might be?
Fire fighting trainer. A little jet fuel, a match, and the crash crew can practice all day long.
Here is the PDX model.

as a USAF Reservist on a crash crew with the 908th TAG, we had the hulk of a C119 in a pit filled with av gas. Just like you said, we trained wading in av fuel w/fire all around to rescue those in the plane. Hot, heavy asbestos suits in the summer and the above made it memorable.
I'll have to dig though some old negatives, but I used to have a cool photo of me mapping PDX's SD system with a 4800 and the mockup burning in the background.
Actually, a thumbnail of it is on my 20+ year old web page.
