@jimcox yes disposal is one thing. Luckily at our dump recycling center they have oil drums i can pour it into. ?ÿI keep old hydraulic buckets and when i get them full make a trip. If that goes away I will have to figure something else out. There are always bond fires needing a little help to start. But I believe thatƒ??s illegal now days.

@andy-j we had a 10ƒ? snow storm here last winter. Interstate shut down it was bad. ?ÿSo everyone was following google maps and waze and whatever else phone maps they had. So all of a sudden on my back roads we had hot shot runners and every prius and other city folks stuck on our back roads. I should have charged but i pulled a lot of folks out with the deere and f350. One was a bmw. He had low profile tires and was sideways and had slid under the back of a flatbed trailer from a local guy trying to get home. No damage but he wasnƒ??t going anywhere. I drug him a mile to get him headed back to where he came from. People said my phone said i could go this way. I said yes but you canƒ??t get through trees are blocking the road. It took me two hours to cut and move trees out of my driveway. Thankfully i have a grapple on my tractor I still have not burned all that mess up yet.

I have almost always charged my own oil on my trucks. I bought a new truck last year and decided I was tired of laying on the ground changing oil and doing routine maintenance. So first several oil changes I went to the dealership. Today my patience ran out. Even with a schedule time I have no time to wait 2 to 4 hrs sitting around for a simple oil change. ?ÿNot to mention listing to workers speak to ladies and others as if they were idiots. ?ÿToday I arrived early for my appointment right after dropping the daughter off to school. An elderly lady was meeting with the person at one desk and the person was talking to her like she was a moron. I mean no respect at all. All the lady needed was windshield wiper blades replaced and fluid topped off per her receipt from the previous day when she had it serviced. ?ÿThe blades were bad i mean bad i saw it hanging from inside the building. She was upset as she stated she had set their 4 hours yesterday getting oil change and supposedly getting windshield wiper fluid and wiperƒ??s and some more things done. The guy told her she needed to schedule an appointment or leave the car till tomorrow. I was about to come unglued honestly. But held my composure. ?ÿI was asked from my representative what I needed. I said oil change and air filter as well. She said it will be a few hours. ?ÿI said I have an appointment. She said it will still be a few hours. I said why. Her manager came over and started to explain what all technicians had to do in order to change the oil and thats why it takes a couple hours. He was trying to sound educated about special tools training etc. ?ÿI looked at him and said sir They only need 8 quarts of oil. Fl 820-s filter and a 13mm wrench. The truck is warm so it will drain pretty fast. He said it takes time blah blah blah. ?ÿNeedless to say I canceled my appointment headed towards the house and stopped by my family owned parts store and just got everything I needed. Came home changed clothes changed oil and filter and air filter. Got re dressed and off to the field. What in the ever loving world has happened to people that they treat people like dummies. And it was very apparent that the so called manager had never changed oil on a vehicle in his life. Or he was the biggest liar in the world. Now i was so mad I could spit nails. One for the way they treated the lady. And two speaking BS to me as if a darn farm truck sitting in the bay has a owner that has no clue of what to do. I offered to the lady to swap her blades for her if they would give them to her. She got her money refunded and said her husband could do it. She thanked me as we both exited the building. Customer service has flex I guess.?ÿ

This is why I always change my own. That why I know all 9 grease fittings got greased (don't worry - Ford's don't have grease fittings), all fluids checked and I don't stick the drain plug back in when it's still half draining.?ÿ

I used to be an oil change guy when I went back to school for surveying. It took about 25 minutes for a regular car and about 35 for a 4x4 truck with all the extra fluids to check. Customers could sit there and watch me in the express lube if they wanted.?ÿ

When my dad was carrying mail 6 days a week, I would change and fix his flats in the garage and I could do multiple tires in less than an hour. Now, to get a tire fixed (or oil changed) it's an all day job...I mean, HOW?!?! You don't have to run and get parts, tools at your fingertips, a rack to put the vehicle on and pumps that give you the correct amount of fluids. I just don't understand and do everything I can to NOT go to a dealership for ANYTHING.

It's because they ALWAYS overbook. Can't stand to lose money on their time for cancellations etc. So overbook make everyone wait.

nowadays, many new vehicles come with free oil changes and inspections.?ÿ I change the oil, lube, and do maintenance on a Series Land Rover, a MG and an older truck, all antique.?ÿ I change oil and wipers on two other vehicles but take them to the shop for state inspection and an oil change.?ÿ For state inspection, the shop almost always charges me for new wipers.

What I found is doing some of the work yourself, you get to inspect the vehicles and fix other stuff - preventative maintenance.

What happened to the rubber in wiper blades as they only last maybe 6 months or year at best?

I quit doing it for that very reason. They don't like using old oil for dust control in the alleys anymore.

As I understand it, the Magnusonƒ??Moss Warranty Act?ÿrequires that a dealer prove that an aftermarket part or repair caused the need for repair before it can deny warranty coverage.

Yeah I did some research and canƒ??t find anything that voids a warranty for doing an oil change myself. I was thinking if I had say 3 or 4 survey crews and just the crew chief say once every 3 months which is probably very optimistic has to be paid 3 hours time sitting waiting on a oil change. I believe something would have to give. I would probably do them myself and have breakfast ready for the crew when they arrived. At my current place they drop them off and itƒ??s usually a half to most of the day before they are done. Have to plan wisely on when to do them. Rainy day or a day where office work is needed etc. It has been many years but when I was out west with a company oil changes regular preventative maintenance was done at some place in a little to no time. Tires and other repairs was a drop off and use spare truck type of thing. All of those decisions have to be considered on the business side. ?ÿI mean if i am doing farm chores or hay or surveying i can do a lot in 3 hours. Versus sitting in a dealership. ?ÿI guess if i was doing calcs i could do that at dealership. But we need those jiffy lubes or quick lube places again I reckon. I am just going back to doing it all myself. Its not that long and I have a couple kidos that love helping and a wife that loves seeing her youngest hands dipped in oil. ?ÿ???? In winter i will just have to get the old dickies coveralls and a tarp to lay down on the cold ground. Maybe i need a work shop built lol?ÿ

I take all my vehicles to the local Honda shop for service, drop them off early morning, run to the office and pick up my truck and then later get a ride back to pick up whatever is getting service. They do the best of anyone in town.?ÿ

Most Walmarts will take old oil, even if you didn't buy your oil there.

I change my own because I enjoy doing it, and I couldn't be bothered with the waiting to have someone else do something that's so simple.

Of course that may be a thing of the past.?ÿ I don't even know when cars moved to the sealed components or which ones may still need lubed.

The company truck needed two new tires. We have a fleet maintenance contract through a company.

Service manager comes back to say the transaxle fluids need to be changed, I say no (truck has 80kmiles w/o a change).

Service manager tells me "You don't understand, they're not asking you, they're telling you".

Took two more rounds of me saying NO, before they figured out that wasn't happening.

@jon-payne Greasing fittings on my tractor and other implements. I bought myself a dewalt gun. Man it makes life easy. I still use the hand pump one for knotters on baler but just about everything else is done with the dewalt. I used it on the old truck and such. ?ÿ
I had the wife load some app I was told about today for my truck ?ÿover lunch ?ÿnow it has all the info in the palm of my hand lol ?ÿ. Crazy how things have changed?ÿ

As you said, some just monitor distance, but typically none of them monitor the actual oil. They monitor the number and length of your trips, revolutions of the engine, ambient temperature, how many wide open throttle runs etc....it's an algorithm that calculates how quickly the oil will go bad under your specific conditions. I usually change mine when it gets down to around 30%.?ÿ

At dealerships, I thought it was part of their 5236 point inspection.?ÿ My truck has a dozen or so serviceable fittings.?ÿ I recently needed a pitman and idler arm replacement.?ÿ I took it to a local garage to have done.?ÿ He told me that everything was dry and that the dealer definitely wasn't greasing them for me.?ÿ Lazy guys don't want to drop the skip plate I guess.?ÿ I service my wife's Ford Explorer.?ÿ It's all sealed.
