A big subdivision south of town, platted in 1962, has a road naming scheme mainly based on Indian tribes:

Tribes are represented from all across the US.

Mohawk.

Cherokee.

Choctaw.

Ute.

Apache.

They even included the famous "Lost Tribe".

The...

The Hekawi Tribe

This must be the gospel truth because I found it on Facebook. 😛 😛

"The Hekawi Indians in F Troop supposedly got their name from an incident in which they got lost, fell off a cliff, then exclaimed, "We're the Hekawi!" ("Where the heck are we?!") Legend has it that the writers wanted to name the tribe the "Fugawi." But, considering that last pun is based on a word that can't be said on network television even now, it's not surprising that it quietly bit the dust four decades ago. However, Johnny Carson used the Fugawi Indians, leaving it to the audience to get the pun (they always did)."

This is from the IMDB site:

"Chief Wild Eagle: [when asked how the Hekawi got their name] Many moons ago tribe move west because Pilgrims ruin neighborhood. Tribe travel west, over country and mountains and wild streams, then come big day... tribe fall over cliff, that when Hekawi get name. Medicine man say to my ancestor, "I think we lost. Where the heck are we?"

also

"Chief Wild Eagle: Hekawi not fighters! Hekawi lovers!"

and

"Chief Wild Eagle: Hekawis very brave warriors, except for one thing...
Sergeant Morgan O'Rourke: What's that?
Chief Wild Eagle: We *faint* a lot."

Hope this works!

Lost Indian tribe>Figawi race!

And of course, Memorial Day weekend is the annual "Figawi" Regatta from Hyannis to Nantucket Saturday, with a return race Monday. Big times in Nantucket sound that weekend!

The Hekawi Tribe

My son, the MBA, says that he learned marketing by watching F-Troop.

In Tupelo, Lee County, Mississippi, we got one, too.
It is horrible to survey out there. Nothing matches.
I heard one recommendation that if someone needed a survey, they need to get with the neighbors, agree where the property corners and lines need to be, put some "stobbs" in the ground, and THEN call a surveyor. "Yep, there's the corner right there!"

It drives the UPS and FEDEX guys crazy!

Misha Spokle Trail and Misha Spookie Trail right next to each other!?!? I imagine after the mail is delivered everyone does a square dance round the neighborhood to get letters to the correct addresses.

Harold

I have an OLD quad sheet (early 1900s) from northeast Mississippi that shows a slough that I can't call the name of for fear of being banned and called racist. The name of the slough is Dead N****** Slough. Of course there is also one in south Georgia that has been renamed to Negro Head Branch.

I live near Houlka, Chickasaw County, which is just south of Pontotoc County and not too far from Okolona and within sight of Chuquatonchee Creek and the Natchez Trace. We have Tallabinnella, Chiwapa, Yalobusha, Tubbalubba and Telatubby Creeks nearby. Choctaw County is just right down the road. Our area has many Native American place names.
