Came across a couple hundred of these guys while out doing a topo...
Someone with a TWISTED sense of humor went through there a few years back just to mess with you Daryl.
😛
Boy, those are bizarre! I have a really hard time believing that those are natural... Is this near an inhabited area? Any chance that some bored kids did this? (Or bored surveyors?)
Bigfoot was marking a trail.
😉
The warts on this big guy are called burls. According to the ranger, nobody knows where they come from......

I have done that many times with small cottonwoods, but I am sure I have never been in your area. Cool photos!
An Arborist I know posted up this similar find the other day.

Just like a 14 year old boy with a hatchet can blaze more trees in an hour than a 4 man field crew can do all day.......a bored 14 year old boy WITHOUT a hatchet can sure tie a lot of knots in trees.......
Cool pics.
In the top one, the lighter bark looks like giant salt crystals - giving the appearance of a giant tree pretzel.
It's somewhere in the Bible.
As the twig is bent, so grows the tree.
A statement about how the young are influenced by the actions of others.
Daryl-
Where are you and what is the type of tree ?
We have similar barked bush/trees that grow in wet areas in this area (Fergus/Elora Ontario)

Tree Species?
It looks similar to a tree species around here. They don't get very big, maybe 3-4 inches dbh. They often repopulate clearcuts along w/ striped maple and have those distinctive "salt crystals". Found in northern NH at higher elevations, but not much in the south part of the state. Very soft wood, (for a hardwood) similar to a striped maple (same greenish color) but not as smooth as a striped maple. They can usually and can be felled w/ a single machete chop.
From the "Nookie Nookie" Eskimo Tribe wedding ceremony ... tying the knot 😉

Cherokee Indians
Since we are on the subject of bizarre trees and formations, I have heard for years that the Cherokees would take a sapling and bend it over in the direction of water, that way when the trees were old everyone who saw it would know where there was a water source. Can anyone confirm that or is that just legend.
